Three possible answers

Real verdicts, with the math behind them.

Every check returns one of three outcomes — with the dimensions, the constraints that mattered, and exactly how we reached the verdict.

✓Fits

3-seat sofa · 32″ doorway

78×34×32 in. With cushions removed and tilted 12° on entry, clears the 32″ frame with 2.5″ to spare.

!Tight fit

French-door fridge · 36″ entry

35.75″ wide with handles. Removing the handles drops width to 34.5″ — fits with 1.25″ clearance after door-trim subtract.

✕Does not fit

King mattress · 30″ door

76×80×10 in. Even tilted on edge, the 30″ clear opening is 2″ short of the mattress depth. Consider removing the door from its hinges or using a wider entry.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Clear opening width — measure frame edge to frame edge, not the nominal door size.
  2. 02Clear opening height — measure from the floor to the bottom of the header.
  3. 03Door trim depth — casing protrudes into the opening and reduces usable clearance by 1–2 inches per side.
  4. 04Approach space — measure the hallway or landing in front of the door to determine your turning radius.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Using the nominal door size (e.g., "36-inch door") instead of measuring the actual clear opening.
  2. ⚠Forgetting that door trim reduces the usable width by 1–2 inches on each side.
  3. ⚠Not accounting for the approach angle — large items often can't go straight through and need to be angled.
  4. ⚠Ignoring the threshold height at the bottom of the doorway, which reduces vertical clearance.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • What is the standard doorway width in the US?

Standard interior doorways are 32 inches wide (clear opening), while exterior doors are typically 36 inches. Building codes require a minimum clear opening of 32 inches for accessibility.

    01
  • How much space does door trim take up?

Door trim (casing) typically protrudes 0.5 to 1 inch on each side of the frame. This means a 36-inch nominal door may only have 34–35 inches of usable clearance.

    02
  • Can I remove the door to get more clearance?

Yes — removing the door from its hinges adds roughly 1.5 to 2 inches of extra width. The hinge pins usually pop out with a screwdriver and hammer.

    03
  • What if my item is wider than the doorway?

Try tilting or rotating the item at an angle. You can also remove the door for extra width. If it still won't fit, check for wider entry points like patio doors or sliding glass doors.

    04
  • Will a 40 inch wide sofa fit through a 32 inch door?

Not straight through. It may fit if the sofa can rotate so a smaller depth or height leads through the opening, but a true 40 inch rigid width is larger than a 32 inch clear door. Remove legs, cushions, and the door slab, then run the calculator with the sofa depth, height, and actual clear opening.

    05
  • Do I need to account for the hallway when moving through a door?

Yes — the hallway in front of the door determines your turning radius. A narrow hallway limits how much you can angle a large item to get it through the opening.
