What ItemFits Can Check, and What It Can’t

Doors, hallway turns, stairs, elevators, vehicles, rooms and boxes, and where the check stops.

ItemFits is a free online calculator that checks whether furniture, appliances and other large items will fit through doors, along hallways and around corners, up stairs, into elevators, inside cars and trucks, in rooms, and in boxes or storage units. You describe the item and the space in plain words or numbers, in inches or centimeters. ItemFits calculates the answer, names the tightest point, says how much room is left, and shows the math. You can try it without creating an account.

Can ItemFits check whether a sofa will fit through a doorway?

Yes. ItemFits compares the sofa with the door’s clear opening, the space left when the door is open, not the frame size. It tries every way the sofa can go through: upright, on its side, on end, and tilted diagonally, and it gives the tilt angle when tilting is what makes it fit. It can also check the sofa with its legs removed and the door taken off its hinges. The answer says whether it fits, is tight, or does not fit, how much room is left, and which measurement decided it. If the doorway opens onto a narrow hallway, ItemFits checks the turn from the doorway into the hallway as well, because a sofa that clears the door can still get stuck there.

Check a doorway

Does ItemFits check stairs and landings?

Yes. ItemFits checks straight stairs, L-shaped and U-shaped stairs with landings, winder stairs and spiral stairs. It checks the clear width between walls or railings, the headroom over the steps, and whether the item can make the turn at each landing. You pick the type of staircase and enter the measurements you have. When a size that matters is missing, such as headroom, ItemFits either asks for it or uses a standard size and tells you which one, so the answer never rests on a number you did not see.

Check a staircase

Can ItemFits check a turn from a doorway into a hallway?

Yes. ItemFits checks 90 degree corners between two hallways and the turn from a doorway into a narrow hallway. For a corner it shows how much room is left, or by how much the item is too long to make the turn. It also works the other way round: give it the item and it tells you how wide a hallway it needs to get around the corner.

Check a hallway corner

Can ItemFits check whether furniture will fit in an elevator?

Yes. ItemFits checks the elevator door and the inside of the cab separately, because a large cab does not help if the item cannot get through the door. It tries the item flat, on its side and stood on end inside the cab, and it looks for a way to angle the item in through the door. When the measurements do not settle the question, it says so and explains which size decides it, instead of guessing.

Check an elevator

Does ItemFits check whether furniture fits in a car, SUV, van or pickup?

Yes. ItemFits has measured cargo areas for specific makes and models, with the seats up or folded, including the size of the rear opening. Pickup beds are checked as open beds, and the answer tells you when a load would stand higher than the bed sides and needs strapping. For a vehicle that is not in its catalog, ItemFits uses typical sizes for that type of vehicle and says so in the answer. It can also check several items in one vehicle.

Check a car, SUV or truck

Does ItemFits check rooms, or only doorways?

Both. Besides openings, ItemFits checks whether one piece or a set of pieces fits on the floor of a room and how much space is left. An L-shaped sectional is checked by its L-shaped footprint, not as one big rectangle. The furniture fit calculator page also has a room spacing planner that adds walking space around a piece.

Check a room

Can ItemFits check boxes, storage units and moving trucks?

Yes. ItemFits checks items inside boxes, storage units, moving pods, moving trucks and cargo vans, using standard sizes for named pods, trucks and storage units when you do not have your own measurements, and it can pack several items together. It can also work backward and tell you what size box an item needs.

Check a box or storage unit

Can ItemFits check a whole delivery route?

Yes, one step at a time. Describe the route in order, for example the front door, then the hallway, then the stairs, and ItemFits checks each step and tells you where the item gets stuck first. It checks the spaces and turns you describe. It does not map your home, so an obstacle you do not mention, such as a radiator or a low light fixture, is not part of the check.

Check a whole route

Does ItemFits treat every item as a rigid box?

No. A sectional that comes apart is checked piece by piece, and an L-shaped sectional that does not is checked as an L. Removable legs can be taken off in the check: give the leg height, or ItemFits checks a range of typical leg heights and tells you when the answer depends on it. Mattresses, futons and sofa beds may flex a little and are allowed to. A framed sofa is treated as rigid, so ItemFits never counts on squeezing it through a gap. Round, curved or irregular pieces are checked using their outer box, which is the cautious choice.

Check a sectional

Does ItemFits work for appliances, TVs and other items, or only furniture?

It works for any item you can give a width, depth and height for. That includes refrigerators, washers and dryers, TVs, mattresses, pianos, desks, bikes, lumber and boxed items still in their packaging. For many common items ItemFits already knows typical sizes, and it tells you when it used one, so you can replace it with your own measurement.

Check an appliance

How accurate is ItemFits?

The calculation itself is exact geometry: for the same measurements it gives the same answer every time. The main source of error is the measurements, so measure the clear opening and the item at its widest points. When there is very little room to spare, ItemFits says the fit is tight rather than calling it a sure fit, and when a size it needs is missing it asks or tells you which standard size it used.

Read the methodology

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Width, depth and height of the item at its widest points, including feet, arms and handles.
  2. 02The clear opening of every door on the route, measured with the door open.
  3. 03Hallway widths on both sides of each corner, and the space right after each doorway.
  4. 04Stair width, headroom over the steps, and the size of each landing.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the door frame instead of the clear opening.
  2. ⚠Checking the front door but not the turn right behind it.
  3. ⚠Assuming the legs or arms come off before checking with the maker.
  4. ⚠Leaving out a railing, radiator or light fixture that narrows the route.

Where it stops

What ItemFits cannot do.

ItemFits checks geometry. These are the things it leaves to you, so you know what an answer does and does not cover.

It is only as good as your measurements.

Measure the clear opening, not the frame, and include feet, arms and handles. When a size is missing, ItemFits asks for it or uses a standard size and tells you which one.

It checks the spaces you describe.

It does not see your home. A stair railing, radiator, low light fixture or tight spot you leave out is not in the check.

Framed furniture is treated as rigid.

ItemFits does not give a framed sofa or cabinet credit for squeezing. Only mattresses, futons, sofa beds and similar soft items are allowed to flex.

Unusual shapes use their outer box.

L-shaped sectionals have their own shape. Round, curved or irregular pieces are checked using their outer box, which is cautious: they may fit where the box would not.

It does not plan the lift.

ItemFits checks the geometry. It does not weigh the item or plan how to carry it safely, protect walls, or handle a heavy appliance on stairs.

A close fit is a close fit.

When there is very little room left, the answer says the fit is tight. Confirm close calls with the retailer or your delivery team; it is a planning aid, not a delivery guarantee.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Is ItemFits free?

You can try ItemFits free without creating an account. A free account adds more free checks, plus one more free check each week when you run out. More checks are a one-time purchase, not a subscription.

    01
  • Does ItemFits work in centimeters?

Yes. Enter sizes in inches, feet and inches, centimeters or meters, and label which size belongs to the item and which to the space.

    02
  • How does ItemFits work out an answer?

It calculates the answer from the item and space sizes with geometry, the same way each time, rather than estimating it. Answers can show their calculation step by step. The methodology page explains the tolerances and data sources.

    03
  • What does it mean when ItemFits says a fit is tight?

The item fits on paper but with little room to spare, so small measuring errors or the way it is carried can matter. Measure again and confirm with whoever is delivering it.

    04
  • Can stores use ItemFits?

Yes. Furniture stores can add the ItemFits check to product pages with the ItemFits app for Shopify, Wix and WooCommerce. See ItemFits for furniture retailers.

    05
  • Is there an ItemFits app or browser extension?

ItemFits runs in the web browser on phones and computers, so there is nothing to install. The free ItemFits extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge reads product sizes on shopping sites and checks the fit while you shop.

    06
  • Who makes ItemFits?

ItemFits is made by ItemFits LLC. See About ItemFits.
