Rotation turns the furniture and its clearance together. We prefer an orientation that fits, then the one with the most room left in its tightest dimension. The percentages describe area, not how easy it is to walk through the room.

You’ve found the right piece for your room. Before delivery day, there’s one more thing to check: every doorway, turn and flight of stairs between the truck and its final spot.

A few careful measurements can help you spot problems before they become failed deliveries, damaged walls or unexpected returns. Use the calculator above to explore your fit question, and follow this guide to measure the full route.

How to use the furniture fit calculator

  1. Measure the furniture. Record width, depth and height, including packaging and fixed parts that will remain on during the move.
  2. Measure the delivery route. Record clear openings, turning space and overhead clearance. Describe each doorway, hallway, stair landing or elevator involved.
  3. Enter your question above. Label each dimension and include units, such as inches or centimeters. Supply any missing details requested, review the result’s assumptions, and confirm the route with your delivery provider.

Why all three dimensions? A sofa’s width alone cannot determine doorway fit. Its height and depth affect possible orientations, while the space on either side determines whether there is room to turn. A doorway check also does not establish that the remaining delivery route is clear.

01 / The item

1. Key Furniture Dimensions

Measure the outermost points of the item in the condition it will be moved.

  • Width: left to right when facing the front.
  • Height: floor to the tallest point, including the backrest.
  • Depth: front to back, including fixed protrusions.

Packaging matters. Measure the actual packaged dimensions if the wrapping or box will stay on; don’t rely on a standard allowance.

02 / The opening

2. Doorway Fit

  • Door width: the usable clear opening with the door open, accounting for the door leaf and hardware.
  • Door height: from the highest floor or threshold point to the lowest part of the opening.
  • Side wall distance: room beside the opening for rotation.
  • Front wall distance: maneuvering space before and after the door.

Side-wall clearance matters when rotating a large item. Measure every doorway on the route, including interior doors.

Where possible, plan for 1–1.5 inches of extra clearance on each side for handling. This is a planning allowance, not a fit guarantee. Trim and hardware that reduce the opening must be included.

Between the openings

Hallways and 90-degree turns

A wide door can open onto a corner that stops a long piece. Measure both corridors and describe the turn.

  • Clear width of the incoming and outgoing corridor.
  • Distance from the door to the opposite wall and nearest corner.
  • Ceiling height and any radiators, rails or projecting fixtures.
  • Whether there is usable space beyond the corner to pivot.

Record what you measured: clear space between obstructions or wall-to-wall dimensions plus the obstructions. Do not deduct the same railing or trim twice.

03 / The climb

3. Staircase Fit

  • Stair width: clear space between walls or railings.
  • Ceiling height: vertical clearance above the steps and landings.
  • Turns and landings: count them and describe each change of direction.
  • Landing depth and width: usable space for turning.
  • Step rise: the height from one step to the next.
  • Tread depth: the usable front-to-back depth of a step.
  • Total steps: count each flight separately.

A landing smaller than the item’s depth may restrict rotation. Landing size alone does not settle the fit: the item’s orientation, railings and overhead space matter too.

4. Elevator Fit

Check both the opening and the interior cabin.

A large cabin does not help if the item cannot clear the door. Check the approach, turning room and the building’s loading rules as well.

The most restrictive point often determines whether the route works. A straight section that fits may still lead to a turn that does not.

6. Preparing the Delivery Path

  • Clear rugs, furniture, boxes and decorations.
  • Protect floors, walls, corners and railings where appropriate.
  • Remove obstacles before the team arrives.
  • Reserve elevators or loading areas where required.
  • Confirm which furniture parts are removable with the manufacturer or retailer.
  • Measure the full path, not only the final doorway.

Tape out the piece and the space you need around it. Try opening drawers, pulling out chairs and walking from the door to your seat.

Sources: Crate & Barrel’s coffee table guide recommends a 14-inch sofa gap; its dining table guidance uses at least 36 inches to walls or furniture. The broader ranges above are planning suggestions to test in your room. For accessibility, consult the U.S. Access Board’s route guidance: a width value alone does not cover doors, turns or approach space.

Will a queen bed fit a 10 × 10 ft room?

A 60 × 80 in mattress centered against one wall leaves 30 in on each side and 40 in at the foot in an empty 120 × 120 in room. The bed frame and other furniture use some of that space.

A 76 × 80 in king leaves only 22 in per side in the same arrangement. Physical floor fit and comfortable access are different questions.

How much room for a dining table?

For a 72 × 36 in table with 36 in on all four sides, reserve 144 × 108 in: a 12 × 9 ft rectangle. At 42 in clearance, that becomes 156 × 120 in, or 13 × 10 ft.

Seating capacity also depends on chair width, table legs and usable edge space. A table footprint alone cannot promise a seat count.

What the fit math can—and cannot—tell you

Doorways: check width and height together

A rectangular end face carried square to the opening needs both dimensions to clear. For an 84 × 30 × 34 in box carried lengthwise through a 32 × 80 in clear opening, a 30 × 34 in end face leaves 2 in across the width and 46 in vertically.

That establishes clearance at the opening in that pose. It does not establish enough room to bring the 84-inch length into position or turn afterward.

Why a doorway diagonal is not enough

A 40 × 40 in rigid square has a diagonal of about 56.6 in—less than the 86.2 in diagonal of a 32 × 80 in opening. Yet rotating that square within the opening’s plane never makes it narrower than 40 in.

For a face with sides a and b rotated by angle θ in the opening plane:

width = a cos θ + b sin θ
height = a sin θ + b cos θ

Both projections must fit at the same angle. Three-dimensional threading and a sofa’s actual profile are different problems. Comparing diagonals, or adding doorway width to ceiling height, does not prove a delivery path.

Rooms: include the space around the piece

The planner above adds the clearance to each open side, then checks the resulting rectangle against the room in both orientations.

An 84 × 38 in sofa against a wall, with 36 in on its left, right and front, needs 156 × 74 in. In a 168 × 144 in room, that leaves 12 in across the width and 70 in across the depth beyond the reserved footprint.

Those are total leftover dimensions, not extra clearance guaranteed on every side. Furniture area and reserved walkway area are shown separately.

Corners and stairs: movement matters

For an ideal, zero-thickness ladder moving flat around a right-angle corner, the length limit is (A2/3 + B2/3)3/2, where A and B are the corridor widths.

Furniture has thickness. Stairs add slope, railings, landings and headroom. Multiplying the ladder limit by an arbitrary safety percentage is not a validated furniture fit test. Describe the full turn and check the assumptions in the result.

Elevators: three questions to answer

  1. Can the item pass the car door?
  2. Can it fit within the cabin?
  3. Can it move between those positions with the available approach space?

A cabin diagonal answers none of these on its own. Include the door’s position, the approach, and the cabin’s width, depth and height.

See more in our furniture dimensions reference. A nominal 30-, 32- or 36-inch door is also only a starting label: measure its clear opening. There is no universal deduction for the leaf, hinges and stops, and no fixed number of inches gained by removing a door.

A useful next step

What to do when furniture does not fit

  1. Recheck the limiting measurement. Confirm units and the actual delivery configuration. Measure the narrowest point twice.
  2. Check confirmed removable parts. Ask the manufacturer about legs, backs, doors or modules. Remeasure the resulting piece; never subtract an assumed allowance.
  3. Measure another complete route. A wider entrance is useful only if its next doorway, landing and turn also work.
  4. Ask the delivery provider to assess a tight move. Send dimensions and photos before delivery. Discuss building restrictions and handling space.
  5. Change the delivery configuration or the purchase. Consider a verified split foundation, smaller modules or assembly in the room. Check each package, and confirm return terms before ordering.

  • Item model and configuration: packaged, assembled or confirmed disassembled.
  • Width × depth × height, units and fixed protrusions for each piece.
  • Every opening’s clear width and height.
  • Approach and exit space, corridor widths and turn directions.
  • Each stair flight, landing, railing and overhead obstruction.
  • Elevator door, cabin and loading restrictions.
  • Photos and the measurements that still need confirming.

This furniture fit calculator helps estimate whether an item can pass through a measured doorway, staircase, elevator, hallway or other space. Results are guidance only and are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate.

Measurement inaccuracies
Small errors can materially change a result. Measure carefully and verify critical dimensions, including packaging and the narrowest clearances.
Complex furniture shapes
Calculations generally use box-like outer dimensions. Curved arms, protrusions, angled legs and other irregular features can behave differently during a move.
Rotation and tilt
Real movement depends on available turning space and how far the item can safely be tilted or rotated. A fit at one point does not establish a clear path through the entire route.
Fixed components
Do not assume legs, backs, cushions, arms, doors or other parts are removable unless the manufacturer or retailer confirms it.
Architectural details
Door frames, thresholds, trim, railings, baseboards and fixtures can reduce usable clearance. Include every obstruction in your measurements.

Verify measurements before purchasing or moving furniture, and consult your retailer, delivery provider or a qualified professional where appropriate. Applicable retailer delivery and return policies remain controlling; check them directly with your provider.

Does furniture fit mean through the door or in the room?

They are separate checks. Use the delivery calculator for openings, stairs, elevators and turns. Use the room planner for one rectangular furniture footprint plus clearance in an empty rectangular zone. Passing either check does not establish the other.

Can I use inches or centimeters?

The room planner accepts inches or centimeters and converts entered values when you switch units. The delivery calculator accepts dimensions with units written in your question. Always label which measurement belongs to the item and which belongs to the space.

Can a queen or king bed fit in a 10 × 10 ft bedroom?

In an empty 120 × 120 in room, a 60 × 80 in queen mattress centered against one wall leaves 30 in per side and 40 in at the foot. A 76 × 80 in king leaves 22 in per side. Add the actual bed frame, nightstands and door swings before deciding whether the layout works.

How much clearance should I leave around a dining table?

Start with 36 in from the tabletop edge to the nearest obstruction and test your actual chairs. Try 42–48 in where people pass behind seated guests. A 72 × 36 in table with 36 in on every side needs a 144 × 108 in rectangle, before accounting for other obstacles.

Will a queen box spring fit up my stairs?

Measure the actual rigid foundation, every stair flight, the landings and the available headroom. Do not assume it can bend like a mattress. A split foundation can make a move easier, but each section still needs its own route check.

Does the room planner work for L-shaped rooms or sectionals?

Measure a clear rectangular zone within an L-shaped room. For a sectional, enter the full outer footprint including the chaise; this reserves its bounding rectangle and does not reclaim the empty space inside the L. The planner does not combine multiple furniture pieces or verify connected walking paths.

How do I measure furniture to see if it will fit through a door?

Measure the item’s full width, depth and height, then the door’s usable opening with the door open. Include packaging, handles and other fixed protrusions. Measure the space on both sides of the doorway so you can check whether the item has room to turn. Door width alone cannot establish that the whole move will work.

Will a couch fit through a 30-, 32- or 36-inch door?

The nominal door size is not enough to tell. Measure the actual clear width and height, the couch’s outer dimensions, and the approach and exit space. Orientation can change which dimensions need to clear the opening, but tilting also requires sufficient room and headroom. Use the measured opening rather than assuming a standard door guarantees a fit.

How should I measure a sectional sofa for delivery?

Confirm with the manufacturer or retailer whether the sectional separates into modules. If it does, measure each module in its delivery configuration, including fixed connectors, arms and legs. Check every module along the full route. Do not assume a sectional separates or that its legs can be removed.

How accurate do my measurements need to be?

Results depend directly on the dimensions you provide. Measure critical spaces twice, use the same units throughout, and pay particular attention to the narrowest points in the route. Include packaging if it will stay on during delivery.

Does the calculator work for furniture with curved arms or irregular shapes?

A rectangular bounding box is a useful starting point. Measure the widest, tallest and deepest fixed points, including curved arms, protrusions and angled legs. An irregular shape can move differently from its bounding box, so verify tight clearances with your delivery provider.

What are common obstacles people forget to measure?

Interior doors, hallway turns, stair railings, low lighting fixtures, sloped ceilings, baseboards, trim and thresholds are common misses. Also measure the maneuvering room on both sides of an opening.

What if ItemFits says it fits but the delivery team can’t get it in?

Real spaces can contain conditions that were not included in the measurements, and safe handling can require more room. ItemFits is a planning aid, not a delivery guarantee. Verify the complete route with your retailer or delivery provider; their delivery and return policies still apply.
