Whether it fits comes down to the measurements most people skip.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Cabinet width of the unit itself — a "24-inch" built-in dishwasher is actually about 23.5 in wide across the body, so it clears a 32 in interior door and even most 28–30 in doors with the panel on
  2. 02Depth with the door and handle attached — the body is ~24 in deep, but a protruding handle or a custom cabinet panel can add 1–3 in, which matters when you tilt the unit to roll it on a hand truck
  3. 03Height including the leveling legs — adjustable feet set the height between 33.5 and 35 in; fully retract them before measuring so the unit sits at its shortest for the carry
  4. 04Doorway clear width between frame stops — built-ins almost always fit, but a compact 18 in model bound for an under-counter slot still needs the path measured if it is going through a 24–28 in closet or pantry door

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Carrying the dishwasher without draining it first — residual water in the sump and hoses spills onto the floor and into the control board the moment you tilt the unit
  2. ⚠Leaving the water inlet and drain hose dangling — they snag on the door frame and can shear off the brass inlet fitting, turning a simple move into a plumbing repair
  3. ⚠Setting the dishwasher down on its front (door) side — the door, latch, and control panel are the most fragile parts; always rest it on the back or base
  4. ⚠Forgetting the unit is top-heavy when empty — the motor and pump sit low but the door and racks shift the balance forward, so a one-person tilt-and-roll can pitch it onto its face

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Will a standard dishwasher fit through a 32-inch door?

Yes, easily. A standard built-in dishwasher is 24 inches wide at the cabinet opening and about 23.5 inches across the body itself, so it clears a 32-inch interior door with several inches to spare. Even a 28-inch narrow door works, though you should pull the door off its hinges if a custom cabinet panel is attached.

    01
  • How much does a dishwasher weigh?

A standard dishwasher weighs 60–80 lbs, making it one of the lightest major appliances to move. Two people can carry it without a dolly. The weight sits low (motor and pump in the base), but the door and racks shift the balance forward when you tilt it.

    02
  • How do I prepare a built-in dishwasher to move through a door?

Turn off the power and water supply, run a short cycle to clear standing water, then disconnect the water inlet, drain hose, and electrical whip under the unit. Remove the two mounting screws at the underside of the counter, slide it out, and tape the door shut and the hoses to the back so nothing snags the door frame.

    03
  • What about an 18-inch compact dishwasher?

Compact 18-inch dishwashers are even easier — the body is about 17.5 inches wide and fits through nearly any interior or closet door. They are also lighter (45–60 lbs). The same prep applies: drain, disconnect, and secure the hoses before carrying.
