What to measureAssembled 9 ft table: ~114 × 64 in cabinet (1,000 lbs). Slate slab (1 of 3): ~38–40" W × 32" D × 1" thick, 130–230 lbs

Real openings run about 1 to 2 inches under the labeled size, and a single inch can flip the result. Check your own measurements before you buy or move.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Whether the table is slate or slate-substitute — a true slate table (1 in slate in three pieces) is always disassembled to move, while a cheap MDF-bed table is one piece but still 53–64 in wide and will not clear a door whole
  2. 02Slate slab dimensions once removed — on a 9 ft table each of the three slate pieces is roughly 38–40 in wide × 32 in deep × 1 in thick and weighs 130–230 lbs, and that slab width is the number that must clear the door
  3. 03Rail and cabinet leg pieces — after the slate comes off, the frame, rails, and legs detach into flat pieces that fit through any standard door; bag and label the hardware by section
  4. 04Door clear width and the path on both sides — slate is carried flat by 2–4 people, so you need swing room to turn the slab through the opening, not just the raw door width

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Trying to move a slate table assembled — at 53–64 in wide and 700–1,000 lbs it will not fit through any residential door, and dragging it racks the frame and cracks the slate seams
  2. ⚠Carrying a slate slab flat-unsupported in the middle — 1 in slate cracks under its own weight if lifted by the ends; carry it on edge or fully supported, never sagging
  3. ⚠Skipping the professional re-level after reassembly — a table moved without re-leveling and re-felting plays off-true; this is an installer job, not a DIY finish
  4. ⚠Losing the section-specific hardware — rail bolts and slate screws are not interchangeable between tables; bag them per section and tape to the matching piece

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Can you move a pool table through a door in one piece?

No — not a regulation table. The assembled cabinet is 53–64 inches wide (a 9 ft table is about 64 in across the rails), which will not clear a 32 in interior door or a 36 in exterior door. Quality slate tables are designed to come apart: the felt, rails, and three slate pieces all detach, and the table is reassembled in the room.

    01
  • How big and heavy are the slate pieces?

A regulation table uses a 1 in slate bed shipped in three pieces. On a 9 ft table each piece is roughly 38–40 in wide, 32 in deep, and weighs 130–230 lbs. Those slabs fit through a standard door carried flat by two to four people — the slab width, not the assembled table, is the fit question that matters.

    02
  • How much does a pool table weigh?

A 7 ft table is about 700 lbs, an 8 ft about 850 lbs, and a 9 ft about 1,000 lbs assembled. The slate alone is 400–600 lbs on a 9-footer, split across three pieces. This is why disassembly and floor load — not doorway width — are the real constraints.

    03
  • Should I move a slate pool table myself?

Disassembly, slate handling, and re-leveling are best left to professional pool table movers. Cracked slate is expensive and the table will not play true if reassembled even slightly off-level. Expect $200–$600 for a local move including breakdown, transport, and setup with new felt if needed.
