Leave at least 24 inches of clear space for walking paths between furniture. Main traffic routes (bedroom door to closet, living room to kitchen) need 36 inches. Around a bed, allow 24 inches on each side for making the bed.
Measure length and width wall-to-wall at floor level. Note door positions, window locations, radiators, and any architectural features. Sketch a simple floor plan and mark the door swing arc. Then compare your furniture footprints to the available floor area.
A queen bed (60" × 80") needs a room at least 10 × 10 feet (120" × 120") for comfortable use — that allows 24 inches of clearance on three sides and room for a dresser or nightstand.
A standard 84" couch with a 48" × 24" coffee table needs about 10 × 12 feet of floor area for comfortable spacing. In a smaller room, consider a loveseat (60") or apartment-size sofa (72") instead.
