Measure smart
What to measure.
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
- 01Width, depth, and height of the item, taken at the widest points, including feet, arms, handles, and headboards.
- 02The clear opening of the space, not the frame. A 36-inch door gives roughly 32 inches once the door and stops are accounted for.
- 03The item's smallest dimension. It decides whether tilting or turning it on its side gets it through.
- 04Diagonal clearance at turns, landings, and corners, where the real bottleneck usually is.
Don't make these
Common mistakes.
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
- ⚠Measuring the door frame instead of the clear opening, then losing two inches you assumed you had.
- ⚠Forgetting that feet, arms, and handles add to the nominal size printed on the box.
- ⚠Treating a soft mattress and a rigid frame the same. One compresses, the other does not.
- ⚠Planning the doorway but ignoring the turn at the top of the stairs.

Frequently asked
Questions we keep getting.
What dimensions do I need to move furniture?
Three numbers do most of the work: the item's width, depth, and height; the clear opening of every space it passes through; and the item's smallest dimension, which decides whether tilting it helps.
01How much clearance does a standard doorway give?
A standard 36-inch exterior door gives about 32 inches of clear opening with the door open; a 32-inch interior door gives about 30. Always measure the gap, not the frame.
02Should I measure the flat-pack box or the assembled item?
Both. The box is what you carry up the stairs; the assembled size is what has to fit in the room. We list both for IKEA products.
03Do these dimensions work with the fit calculators?
Yes. Every size on these pages is the same data our solver uses. Enter your item and your space in the calculator above and it checks the exact fit, including tilt and turn.
