Folded suit · 22″ carry-on
20×13×3 in folded. Fits flat in the main compartment with 0.5″ of depth margin for compression.
Check boxes, bags, suitcases, storage units, moving pods, and shipping containers by interior dimensions, opening size, and packing orientation.
This calculator determines if items will fit in suitcases, bags, boxes, storage units, moving pods, and shipping containers. It covers questions like “what size storage unit do I need,” “will furniture fit in a 5x10 storage unit,” “what size box do I need,” and “will it fit in a suitcase” by comparing item size against interior dimensions, container opening size, packing orientation, and weight limits.
Three possible answers
Every check returns one of three outcomes — with the dimensions, the constraints that mattered, and exactly how we reached the verdict.
20×13×3 in folded. Fits flat in the main compartment with 0.5″ of depth margin for compression.
78×34×32 in sofa fits along the 10 ft wall, but the roll-up door height leaves less than 2″ of margin when stood on end.
60×12×4 in. Snowboard length 60″ exceeds the 29″ max suitcase dimension. Use a dedicated snowboard bag or ship separately.

Measure smart
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
Don't make these
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
Frequently asked
Open the suitcase fully flat and measure length, width, and depth from the inside walls. The depth is the distance from the bottom lining to where the zipper closes. Don't include exterior handles, wheels, or frame in your measurements.
01Most airlines allow carry-on bags up to 22" × 14" × 9" (including handles and wheels). The interior usable space is typically 20" × 13" × 8" — about 2,080 cubic inches.
02Measure all three dimensions of both the item and the box interior. Each item dimension must be less than or equal to the corresponding box dimension (length ≤ box length, width ≤ box width, height ≤ box height). Try all orientations if the first doesn't work.
03A 5x10 storage unit can usually handle a sofa, mattress, boxes, and a small apartment load if packed tightly. Larger homes often need 10x10 or 10x20 units. Measure the largest rigid item first, then compare it with the storage unit door opening and interior length.
04Most sofas fit in a 5x10 or larger storage unit when stood on end or placed along the long wall. The key checks are sofa length, unit interior depth, and the roll-up door opening height.
05For moving pods, compare your largest furniture pieces with the pod interior and door opening before choosing by room count. For shipping containers, check both the container opening and interior dimensions because the usable door opening is smaller than the interior width and height.
