Will a Wardrobe Fit Through a Door?

Enter your wardrobe dimensions and doorway measurements to find out instantly — width, depth, disassembly options, and all.

Depends on Size

Most full-size wardrobes (36–80" wide) are wider than a standard 32" doorway and will not fit through upright. Flat-pack wardrobes can be disassembled into panels that fit easily. Solid wardrobes under 32" deep can be tilted on their side, but this requires significant hallway space and at least two people.

Key Measurement

Wardrobe depth (when tilted on side) vs. door clear width — or panel width if disassembled

Standard Dimensions

Item: Standard wardrobe: 36–80" W × 22–24" D × 72–84" H (100–400 lbs)

Space: Standard interior door: 80" H × 32" W clear opening

Tip: If your wardrobe is flat-pack, disassemble it completely — individual panels are under 24" wide and fit through any door with ease.

Verdicts are calculated by comparing all 6 item orientations against the space dimensions using verified building code standards. See our methodology

What to Measure

  • 1Door and drawer removal weight — wardrobe doors weigh 8–15 lbs each and drawers 5–10 lbs; removing them all before moving can shed 30–60 lbs and eliminate swinging panels that catch on the door frame
  • 2Doorway clear width between the inside edges of the frame — most wardrobes (36–80" wide) exceed this opening, so the exterior depth (22–24") becomes the pass-through dimension when the unit is tilted on its side
  • 3Internal shelf extraction — pull out every adjustable shelf, hanging rod, and drawer before tilting; loose internals shift the center of gravity mid-tilt and can punch through the thin back panel
  • 4Mirror or glass panel weight and fragility — mirrored wardrobe doors add 15–25 lbs per panel and shatter on impact with the frame edge; remove and wrap them separately before attempting the doorway

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to tilt a fully loaded wardrobe like a sofa — at 200–400 lbs with a high center of gravity, an un-emptied wardrobe is a tipping hazard that can crush toes, crack the floor, or shear its own back panel
  • Leaving wardrobe doors attached during the move — hinged doors swing open mid-tilt, catch the door frame, and either rip the hinge cups out of the particleboard or gouge the frame trim
  • Not checking whether the unit is flat-pack or solid — IKEA PAX and similar flat-pack wardrobes disassemble into sub-24" panels in 20 minutes, while a solid armoire must go through whole and often requires the entry door removed
  • Ignoring the hallway pivot space — even with the wardrobe on its side (24" profile), you need the full 72–84" of hallway length to rotate the piece into the doorway opening

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I disassemble my wardrobe to fit through a doorway?

Flat-pack wardrobes (IKEA PAX, Brimnes, etc.) are designed for disassembly — remove all shelves, drawers, and doors, then separate the panels using a Phillips screwdriver or hex key. Each panel is typically under 24" wide and fits through any door. Solid wood armoires usually cannot be disassembled without damage.

What if my wardrobe is wider than the doorway?

If the wardrobe depth (22–24") is less than the door clear width (32"), you can tilt the wardrobe on its side so the depth passes through the opening. This only works if the hallway outside the door gives you enough room to maneuver the full height (72–84") horizontally. Remove the door and hinges first for an extra 1.5–2 inches.

Should I remove the wardrobe doors and drawers before moving?

Always. Wardrobe doors add 1–2 inches of depth when they swing open during transport and can catch on door frames. Drawers can slide out and cause injury. Remove all doors (usually lift off hinge clips), pull out drawers, and remove the hanging rod. This also reduces weight by 20–40 lbs.

How heavy is a standard wardrobe?

Flat-pack particle board wardrobes weigh 100–200 lbs assembled. Solid wood armoires weigh 200–400 lbs. A large IKEA PAX (3-section, 59" wide) weighs about 200 lbs fully assembled. Always empty the wardrobe completely before moving — clothing and contents can add 50–100+ lbs.
