Whether it fits comes down to the measurements most people skip.

Real openings run about 1 to 2 inches under the labeled size, and a single inch can flip the result. Check your own measurements before you buy or move.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Room length and width at floor level — measure wall-to-wall and note door locations, window positions, and closet openings
  2. 02Bed footprint including frame — a queen mattress is 60" × 80", but the frame and headboard add 2–6 inches on each side
  3. 03Walking clearance on each side — plan for at least 24" on each accessible side for making the bed and getting in/out
  4. 04Door swing and closet access — ensure the bed doesn't block any door arcs or closet sliding tracks

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring only the mattress and not the bed frame — headboards, footboards, and side rails add 4–12 inches to the total footprint
  2. ⚠Placing the bed centered in the room without checking door swing clearance — a door that can't open fully is a safety hazard
  3. ⚠Forgetting nightstand space — each nightstand needs 15–24" of width plus clearance to open drawers
  4. ⚠Choosing a king bed for a room under 12 × 12 feet — a king (76" × 80") with clearances needs at least 12 × 13 feet

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • What is the minimum room size for a queen bed?

A queen bed (60" × 80") needs a room at least 10 × 10 feet for basic fit with 24" clearance on two sides. For comfortable use with nightstands, 10 × 12 feet is recommended.

    01
  • Can I fit a king bed in a 12×12 room?

A king bed (76" × 80") fits in a 12 × 12 room, but clearance is tight — about 34" on each side of the bed. You'll have space for small nightstands but not a dresser against the same wall.

    02
  • How much space do nightstands need?

Standard nightstands are 18–24" wide × 16–20" deep. Allow the nightstand width plus 6" for the lamp and alarm clock. Total side clearance: nightstand + 24" walking path.
