Whether it fits comes down to the measurements most people skip.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Room length and width — measure wall-to-wall and identify the longest uninterrupted wall for the sofa placement
  2. 02Sofa overall length and depth — include armrests in the length measurement and any reclining extension in the depth
  3. 03Coffee table distance — maintain 16–20" between the sofa front edge and the coffee table for comfortable leg room
  4. 04TV viewing distance — the recommended distance is 1.5–2.5× the TV's diagonal size (e.g., 65" TV = 8–14 feet from sofa)

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Buying a sofa based on room length without checking depth — a 40" deep sofa against one wall leaves only 104" in a 12-foot-wide room
  2. ⚠Placing a full-size sofa against a window — the sofa back blocks natural light and may interfere with window operation
  3. ⚠Not accounting for recliner extension — reclining sofas need 4–6" of clearance behind them for the mechanism to open fully
  4. ⚠Forgetting traffic flow — a sofa blocking the path from the entryway to the kitchen creates a daily frustration

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • How does the sofa size calculator work?

Enter your room length and width plus the sofa's overall length and depth, and the calculator scales the sofa to your room — it checks the wall run the sofa needs, walking paths (24" minimum), coffee-table spacing (16–20"), and TV viewing distance. Instead of guessing whether an 84" sofa "looks right" in a 12×14 room, you get a fits / tight / too-big verdict with the exact clearances that drive it.

    01
  • Can I size a sectional with this calculator?

Yes. Enter the sectional's overall footprint — total length along the longest side and the depth including the chaise return. The calculator treats an L-shaped sectional as its bounding footprint against your room dimensions, so you can confirm a 110" × 85" sectional leaves room for walking paths and a coffee table before you buy. For larger U-shaped or modular sets, size each section against the wall it will sit on.

    02
  • How far should a sofa be from the TV?

The standard recommendation is 1.5 to 2.5 times the TV's diagonal measurement. For a 65-inch TV, that's about 8 to 13.5 feet. This ensures comfortable viewing without eye strain.

    03
  • What size sofa fits in a small apartment?

For rooms under 12 × 12 feet, a loveseat (48–60") or apartment-size sofa (70–72") works best. These leave enough room for a coffee table, end table, and walking paths without overwhelming the space.

    04
  • How much space do I need between sofa and coffee table?

Leave 16–20 inches between the sofa edge and the coffee table. This allows comfortable legroom for sitting and enough space to walk around the table without squeezing.
