Size reference
Standard dishwasher dimensions.
Standard built-in dishwasher fits a 24-inch cabinet opening; compact models are 18 inches wide. Height is adjustable via leveling legs (33.5–35 inches). The cabinet rough opening is 24 in W × 34–35 in H × 24 in D — the unit itself is ~23.5 in wide, leaving wiggle room. Leave at least 27 in of clearance in front for the door and racks.
Run a check
Will it fit?
On moving day
Moving tips.
- 01Disconnect water supply, drain hose, and power before attempting to remove from the cabinet.
- 02Run an empty cycle before disconnecting to clear out any standing water.
- 03A dishwasher is light enough (60-80 lbs) for two people to carry without a dolly.
- 04Protect the door and controls with a moving blanket during transport.
Measure smart
What to measure.
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
- 01Your dishwasher's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard dishwasher runs about 35" tall, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
- 02The smallest face of the dishwasher and its diagonal. Many appliances only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
- 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a dishwasher, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
- 04The dishwasher's weight and whether doors or shelves detach, so you know how many people, what dolly, and whether it clears on its side.
Don't make these
Common mistakes.
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
- ⚠Measuring the room the dishwasher is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
- ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A dishwasher that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
- ⚠Leaving doors, shelves, or feet on. Detaching them often buys back the inch or two that decides whether the dishwasher fits.
- ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact dishwasher. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.
Frequently asked
Questions we keep getting.
Are all dishwashers the same size?
Most built-in dishwashers are 24 inches wide, 35 inches tall, and 24 inches deep. This is a standard size that fits a 24-inch cabinet opening. Compact models (18 inches wide) exist for smaller kitchens.
01How heavy is a dishwasher?
A standard dishwasher weighs 60-80 pounds, making it one of the lighter major appliances to move.
02How do you remove a built-in dishwasher?
Turn off the water supply and power. Disconnect the water line, drain hose, and electrical connection under the unit. Remove the mounting screws from the underside of the counter. Carefully slide the unit out.
03What is the rough opening for a standard dishwasher?
A standard 24-inch dishwasher needs a cabinet rough opening of 24 in wide × 34–35 in high × 24 in deep. The unit itself is about 23.5 in wide, leaving roughly a quarter-inch on each side for installation. Compact 18-inch models need an 18-inch opening.
04How much clearance does a dishwasher need to open?
Allow at least 27 inches of clearance in front of the dishwasher so the door opens fully and the racks pull out. Corner installations also need about 2 inches of side clearance from adjacent cabinets or walls.
