Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Slate slab dimensions and weight per piece — on a 9 ft table each of the three slate pieces is roughly 38–40 in wide × 32 in deep × 1 in thick at 130–230 lbs, carried flat by 2–4 people; the slab width vs. the stair clear width is the passing dimension
  2. 02Stair clear width at the narrowest point including the banister and newel post — these protrude 2–4 in, and a slate slab carried flat needs that width plus room for the carriers on each side
  3. 03Landing depth and turn geometry — a flat slate slab has to pivot on a mid-flight landing, so a 36 in landing on a quarter-turn or switchback stair is tighter than the straight run above it
  4. 04Destination floor load capacity — a reassembled table concentrates 700–1,000 lbs over a small footprint, far above the 40 lbs/sq ft residential live-load rating; position it over a load-bearing wall or doubled joists, especially on an upper floor

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Trying to carry the table assembled — at 700–1,000 lbs and 53–64 in wide it cannot be carried up a residential stair, and the attempt cracks the slate and racks the frame
  2. ⚠Carrying a slate slab by its ends — 1 in slate snaps under its own weight if unsupported in the middle; carry it on edge or fully supported on a padded board
  3. ⚠Ignoring the upstairs floor rating — a 9 ft table over a small footprint can exceed what a wood-framed upper floor is rated for; verify the joists before the move, not after
  4. ⚠Skipping professional reassembly — slate seams must be shimmed, waxed, and re-felted level, and a DIY job that plays off-true wastes the whole move

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Can you carry a pool table upstairs in one piece?

No. A regulation slate table weighs 700–1,000 lbs and is 53–64 inches wide — it cannot be carried up a residential staircase assembled. The table comes apart into three slate pieces plus rails and legs, and each piece is carried up separately, then the table is reassembled and re-leveled at the top.

    01
  • How heavy is each slate piece?

On a 9 ft table the slate bed is split into three pieces, each roughly 38–40 in wide, 32 in deep, 1 in thick, weighing 130–230 lbs. They are carried flat or on edge by two to four people. Carrying a slab unsupported in the middle will crack it, so professionals use padded boards and straps.

    02
  • Can my upstairs floor support a pool table?

A reassembled 9 ft table concentrates roughly 700–1,000 lbs over a small footprint, well above the 40 lbs/sq ft live load most residential floors are rated for. Position the table over a load-bearing wall or doubled floor joists. For an upper floor, have the framing checked before committing to the location.

    03
  • Should I hire professionals to move a pool table upstairs?

Yes. Slate disassembly, carrying 130–230 lb slabs up stairs, and re-leveling are specialist work. Cracked slate is costly and a table reassembled off-level plays untrue. Professional pool table movers typically charge $200–$600 for a local move including breakdown, the stair carry, and setup with new felt.
