Quick answer

How big is a refrigerator?

A standard refrigerator is about 36 in wide, 34 in deep, and 70 in tall (91 × 86 × 178 cm). Check whether yours fits through your door, up the stairs, in an elevator, or in your car below.

On moving day

Moving tips.

  1. 01Unplug and defrost the fridge 24 hours before the move — place towels to catch melt water.
  2. 02Remove fridge doors if the doorway is too narrow — most have removable hinge pins.
  3. 03Always use an appliance dolly with straps, never try to carry a fridge by hand.
  4. 04Keep the refrigerator upright during transport. If it must be tilted, wait 24 hours before plugging in.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Your refrigerator's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard refrigerator runs about 70" tall, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
  2. 02The smallest face of the refrigerator and its diagonal. Many appliances only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
  3. 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a refrigerator, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
  4. 04The refrigerator's weight and whether doors or shelves detach, so you know how many people, what dolly, and whether it clears on its side.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the room the refrigerator is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
  2. ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A refrigerator that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
  3. ⚠Leaving doors, shelves, or feet on. Detaching them often buys back the inch or two that decides whether the refrigerator fits.
  4. ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact refrigerator. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Will a standard refrigerator fit through a 32-inch doorway?

It will be very tight. A 36-inch wide fridge will not fit through a 32-inch door. You may need to remove the fridge doors (which reduces width by 2-4 inches) or remove the door frame trim. Counter-depth and top-freezer models (28-32 inches wide) fit more easily.

    01
  • Can you lay a refrigerator on its side to move it?

It is not recommended. Laying a fridge on its side can cause compressor oil to flow into the cooling lines. If you must, keep it on its side for as short a time as possible and let it stand upright for 24 hours before plugging in.

    02
  • How much does a refrigerator weigh?

A standard full-size refrigerator weighs 200-350 pounds. French door models tend to be heavier than top-freezer models.

    03
  • How far in advance should you unplug a fridge before moving?

Unplug the fridge 24 hours before moving to allow it to defrost completely. Clean out all food, remove shelves, and mop up any water from defrosting.

    04
  • How long should a fridge sit before turning on after a move?

If the fridge was kept upright during transport, wait 2-4 hours. If it was tilted or on its side at any point, wait 24 hours before plugging in.
