Quick answer

How big is a stove/range?

A standard stove/range is about 30 in wide, 26 in deep, and 36 in tall (76 × 66 × 91 cm). Check whether yours fits through your door, up the stairs, in an elevator, or in your car below.

Standard freestanding range is 30 in wide. Apartment/compact ranges are 24 in; professional and commercial-style ranges are 36–48 in. Depth is ~25–29 in (about 28–30 in with the handle). Slide-in ranges share the width but have no rear backguard. A code-required anti-tip bracket anchors the range to the floor or wall.

On moving day

Moving tips.

  1. 01For gas stoves, turn off the gas valve and disconnect the gas line before moving. Cap the open gas line.
  2. 02For electric stoves, unplug the 240V cord and tape it to the back of the unit.
  3. 03Remove burner grates, knobs, and oven racks and transport them separately.
  4. 04Use an appliance dolly — stoves are heavy and have sharp corners that make them hard to grip.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Your stove/range's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard stove/range runs about 36" tall, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
  2. 02The smallest face of the stove/range and its diagonal. Many appliances only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
  3. 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a stove/range, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
  4. 04The stove/range's weight and whether doors or shelves detach, so you know how many people, what dolly, and whether it clears on its side.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the room the stove/range is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
  2. ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A stove/range that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
  3. ⚠Leaving doors, shelves, or feet on. Detaching them often buys back the inch or two that decides whether the stove/range fits.
  4. ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact stove/range. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Are all stoves the same width?

Most residential stoves are 30 inches wide, which is the standard kitchen cutout size. Commercial-style ranges come in 36, 48, and 60-inch widths.

    01
  • How heavy is a stove?

A standard gas or electric range weighs 100-200 pounds. Dual-fuel and professional ranges can weigh 300+ pounds.

    02
  • How do you disconnect a gas stove safely?

Turn off the gas supply valve behind the stove. Disconnect the flexible gas connector with a wrench. Cap the open gas line. If you smell gas at any point, stop immediately and call your gas company.

    03
  • Will a stove fit through a standard doorway?

Yes. At 30 inches wide and 26 inches deep, a standard stove fits through any standard doorway with ample clearance.

    04
  • What widths do kitchen ranges come in?

The standard freestanding range is 30 inches wide. Apartments often use a 24-inch compact range, while professional and commercial-style ranges come in 36, 48, and 60-inch widths. The 30-inch cutout is by far the most common.

    05
  • Do stoves need an anti-tip bracket?

Yes. Building codes and every manufacturer require a floor- or wall-mounted anti-tip bracket on freestanding ranges so the stove cannot tip forward when weight is placed on an open oven door. Reinstall the bracket whenever you move the range back into place.

    06
  • Will a 30-inch range fit through a tight doorway?

A 30-inch range needs a clear doorway of about 32 inches to roll through on a dolly. If the doorway is 30 inches or tighter, remove the door from its hinges (gains roughly an inch) and take off the range handle and back panel. Keep the path free of thresholds — ranges are top-heavy.
