Run a check
Will it fit?
On moving day
Moving tips.
- 01Disconnect the gas line or electrical cord and the vent hose before moving. For gas dryers, turn off the gas supply valve first.
- 02Clean the lint trap and interior vent duct before moving to reduce fire risk during storage.
- 03Use an appliance dolly with straps and keep the dryer upright during transport.
- 04Tape the dryer door shut with painter tape to prevent it from swinging open.
Measure smart
What to measure.
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
- 01Your clothes dryer's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard clothes dryer runs about 36" tall, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
- 02The smallest face of the clothes dryer and its diagonal. Many appliances only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
- 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a clothes dryer, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
- 04The clothes dryer's weight and whether doors or shelves detach, so you know how many people, what dolly, and whether it clears on its side.
Don't make these
Common mistakes.
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
- ⚠Measuring the room the clothes dryer is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
- ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A clothes dryer that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
- ⚠Leaving doors, shelves, or feet on. Detaching them often buys back the inch or two that decides whether the clothes dryer fits.
- ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact clothes dryer. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.
Frequently asked
Questions we keep getting.
Will a dryer fit through a standard doorway?
Yes. At 27 inches wide, a standard dryer fits through any standard doorway with room to spare.
01How heavy is a dryer?
A standard dryer weighs 100-150 pounds — lighter than a washer since it does not have a counterweight. Still, use an appliance dolly for safe moving.
02What is the difference between gas and electric dryer dimensions?
Gas and electric dryers are the same size (27 inches wide standard). The difference is in the hookup — gas dryers need a gas line and vent; electric dryers just need a 240V outlet and vent.
03Can you use a dryer without a vent?
Only if it is a ventless (condenser or heat pump) dryer. Standard vented dryers must be connected to an external vent duct to expel moisture and lint safely.
