Whether it fits comes down to the measurements most people skip.

Measure the item and the narrowest usable space yourself. Small differences in trim, packaging, hardware, and model configuration can change the result. Check your own measurements before you buy or move.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Clear door opening with the door open 90 degrees — measure from the stop to the door face, not the frame to the frame. A 32 in door usually gives about 30 in clear
  2. 02Tabletop width and thickness. Tilted on edge, the thickness becomes the width the doorway sees, and that is usually 1-3 in
  3. 03Table height with the legs on, which is what has to clear when the top is carried flat
  4. 04Hallway width on both sides of the door, because the top has to be turned before and after the opening

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the door frame instead of the clear opening. The door leaf itself, the stop, and the hinges take 1.5-2 in off the nominal size
  2. ⚠Trying to carry a large top flat. On edge, a 3 in thick top passes almost any door; flat, a 40 in wide top needs a 40 in opening
  3. ⚠Forgetting the door handle, which protrudes 2-3 in into the opening on the hinge-away side
  4. ⚠Not checking the turn at the other end. A 72 in top needs room to swing in the hallway, and a tight landing is what actually blocks the move

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Will a dining table fit through a standard door?

Almost always, tilted on edge. A standard interior door gives about 30 in clear and a dining tabletop is 1-3 in thick, so on edge it passes easily. The limit is the table WIDTH — a 40 in wide top needs 40 in of height in the opening, which a 80 in door provides — and the room to turn it on the far side.

    01
  • Do I need to remove the legs?

For a doorway, usually not, if you can tilt the top on edge with the legs pointing into the room. You need to remove them when the doorway leads straight into a stairwell or a tight landing where the assembled table cannot be rotated, or when the legs are splayed rather than vertical.

    02
  • Will a round table fit through a door?

A round top has no favourable angle in plan, but it does on edge — a 48 in round top tilted vertically presents 48 in of height and only its thickness in width, so a standard 30 in x 80 in door takes it. A 60 in round top starts to conflict with an 80 in door head and may need to go in at an angle.

    03
  • What about a pool table or a glass top?

A pool table is a different job — slate beds are heavy, come in three pieces, and have their own page. A glass top must travel on edge in a padded frame or A-frame, never flat and never leaned unsupported, because point loads on an unsupported edge crack it.
