Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Measure the clear opening from the door stop to the open door face, not the nominal slab or frame width.
  2. 02Measure the item at its widest rigid points, then repeat with removable feet, shelves, handles, or doors taken off.
  3. 03Measure the approach and landing on both sides because the item may clear the opening but fail the turn.
  4. 04Measure the case with fixed wheels, bumpers, and handles included. Retractable handles count if they cannot stay fully flush.
  5. 05Check the narrowest door on the full route, not only the building entrance.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Using the nominal door size instead of the smaller clear opening.
  2. ⚠Trying only the square-on orientation when the item may pass upright, tilted, or on its back.
  3. ⚠Forgetting the hallway turn, ceiling, handrail, or wall immediately beyond the doorway.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Will my oversized travel trunk fit through a 28 inch door?

It depends on the exact suitcase, the measured door, and the available maneuver. Normal luggage clears normal doors. This calculator is for oversized trunks and hard equipment cases where handles, wheels, or the landing create the near miss. Enter both sets of measurements in the calculator for a route-specific answer.

    01
  • What is the most important measurement for this suitcase fit?

Measure the case with fixed wheels, bumpers, and handles included. Retractable handles count if they cannot stay fully flush.

    02
  • Should I include packaging and removable parts?

Measure the transported condition. Include packaging, padding, handles, feet, and hardware that stay attached. Run a second check only after confirming which parts can safely come off.
