Enter the bookcase dimensions and your car measurements to see whether it fits assembled, boxed, or neither.
Whether it fits comes down to the measurements most people skip.
Measure the item and the narrowest usable space yourself. Small differences in trim, packaging, hardware, and model configuration can change the result. Check your own measurements before you buy or move.
Verdicts compare the supported item orientations against the measurements shown above. See our methodology

Measure smart
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
Don't make these
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
Frequently asked
Assembled, usually not. A common 5-shelf bookcase is about 30 in wide, 12 in deep and 72 in tall; a BILLY is 31.5 x 11 x 79 in. That height exceeds the cargo length of most cars and every sedan trunk aperture. Boxed, it is a flat carton around 6 in thick that fits nearly any car with the rear seats folded.
01In the box, yes, in almost any hatchback or folded-seat sedan — the carton is about 31 x 12 x 6 in and weighs around 55 lb. Assembled at 79 in tall it does not fit a car; it needs a van or a roof rack, and moving it assembled risks the back panel anyway.
02A 2 or 3-shelf unit up to roughly 30 in wide, 12 in deep and 30 in tall will go into a hatchback whole and onto a folded back seat in a sedan. The 12 in depth is the friendly dimension — laid on its back it is only 12 in tall, which clears a sedan trunk lid on many cars.
03Empty it, remove the loose shelves, and carry it on edge rather than flat. If it must travel in a car, the shelves and back panel come out and the carcass rides on its back with padding at the corners. Any bookcase over about 48 in tall is genuinely better disassembled.
