Quick answer

How big is a bookshelf?

A standard bookshelf is about 36 in wide, 12 in deep, and 72 in tall (91 × 30 × 183 cm). Check whether yours fits through your door, up the stairs, in an elevator, or in your car below.

On moving day

Moving tips.

  1. 01Always empty all shelves and remove adjustable shelf pegs before moving.
  2. 02Secure doors and drawers with painter tape or stretch wrap to prevent them from swinging open.
  3. 03Carry tall bookcases with one person at each end, tilted slightly backward for balance.
  4. 04For particle board shelves, avoid laying them flat during transport — the back panel can separate.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Your bookshelf's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard bookshelf runs about 72" tall, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
  2. 02The smallest face of the bookshelf and its diagonal. Many pieces only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
  3. 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a bookshelf, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
  4. 04The bookshelf's weight, especially for solid-wood pieces, so you know how many people and what equipment the move needs.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the room the bookshelf is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
  2. ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A bookshelf that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
  3. ⚠Leaving legs, doors, drawers, or cushions on. Removing them often saves the few inches that decide the fit for a bookshelf.
  4. ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact bookshelf. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Will a 6-foot bookshelf fit through a doorway?

Yes. At 36 inches wide and 12 inches deep, a standard bookshelf fits easily through any standard doorway (30-36 inches wide) when carried upright. The height is not an issue since doorways are 80 inches tall.

    01
  • Should you empty a bookshelf before moving it?

Absolutely. Books are extremely heavy — a fully loaded 5-shelf bookcase can weigh over 300 pounds. Empty all shelves and remove adjustable shelves to reduce weight and prevent damage.

    02
  • How much does an empty bookshelf weigh?

An empty standard bookshelf weighs 50-80 pounds for particleboard models and 80-150 pounds for solid wood. IKEA-style flat-pack shelves are on the lighter end.
