Quick answer

How much cargo space does a car have?

A midsize sedan trunk holds about 15 cu ft (0.42 m³), a compact SUV offers 30–40 cu ft (0.85–1.13 m³) behind the second row and 65–75 cu ft (1.8–2.1 m³) with the seats folded, and a cargo van clears 200+ cu ft (5.7+ m³). Load length matters more than volume for furniture — check whether your item fits a specific vehicle below.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01The cargo length with the seats up and again with them folded. The folded length is the number that decides whether a long item lies flat.
  2. 02The width between the wheel wells, not the widest point of the cargo area, since the wells are the real pinch point.
  3. 03The liftgate or trunk opening width and height, which is almost always tighter than the cargo bay behind it.
  4. 04The item's smallest dimension and its diagonal, which decide whether tilting it lets a long piece load through the opening.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Trusting the cubic-foot rating, which says nothing about whether one long, rigid item actually fits.
  2. ⚠Measuring the cargo bay and ignoring the liftgate opening, then getting stuck at the threshold.
  3. ⚠Forgetting to fold the seats, or assuming they fold perfectly flat when many leave a step.
  4. ⚠Overlooking the width between the wheel wells on a flat item like a mattress or tabletop.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Which car has the largest cargo area?

Among standard consumer vehicles, full-size SUVs (like the Chevrolet Suburban) and cargo vans offer the largest cargo areas. With seats folded, a full-size SUV provides approximately 3,500-4,000 mm of length. Cargo vans provide even more space at 3,000+ mm of unobstructed length.

    01
  • Will a queen mattress fit in an SUV?

A queen mattress (60 x 80 inches / 1,524 x 2,032 mm) fits in most mid-size and full-size SUVs with rear seats folded. The mattress may need to be angled or may hang slightly past the tailgate. Compact SUVs are typically too short.

    02
  • What is the trunk size of a typical sedan?

A typical sedan trunk measures approximately 36 inches long, 41 inches wide, and 18 inches tall (914 x 1,041 x 457 mm). With rear seats folded (pass-through), length extends to about 71 inches (1,800 mm).

    03
  • Can I fit a couch in a pickup truck?

Most standard couches (84 inches wide) will fit in a full-size pickup bed (6.5-8 feet long). The couch will hang over the sides or tailgate unless placed at an angle. Secure it with ratchet straps and use a bed extender if needed.

    04
  • What is the cargo space difference between SUV and minivan?

Minivans typically offer more usable cargo space than similarly-sized SUVs. A standard minivan provides approximately 140-150 cubic feet with all seats folded, while a mid-size SUV offers 70-80 cubic feet. Minivans also have lower load floors and wider openings.

    05
  • How do I measure my vehicle cargo area?

Measure three dimensions: length (tailgate to back of front seats with rear seats folded), width (between wheel wells at the narrowest point), and height (floor to roof). Also measure the access opening (tailgate or trunk opening) since items must fit through this first.
