Real openings run about 1 to 2 inches under the labeled size, and a single inch can flip the result. Check your own measurements before you buy or move.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Recliner width and depth with the footrest fully closed
  2. 02Back-removal mechanism and reduced profile after the back lifts off
  3. 03Door clear opening between frame stops, not the nominal slab width
  4. 04Cord, battery pack, handle, cup holder, and side-control protrusions on power recliners

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Not removing the back even though most recliners are designed for it
  2. ⚠Moving the recliner with the footrest unlocked, which lets it spring open and catch the frame
  3. ⚠Forgetting side controls, cup holders, and power cords that add width or snag during the turn
  4. ⚠Measuring only upright width instead of checking the tilted profile through the opening

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Do recliner backs come off for moving?

Many recliners have removable backs. Look for locking levers or tabs on both sides where the back meets the seat, release them, and lift the back straight up.

    01
  • Can a recliner fit through a 30-inch door?

Often yes if the back is removed or the recliner is tilted. A standard recliner may be 36 inches wide, but the removable-back profile can reduce the pass-through depth to about 24 inches.

    02
  • Are power recliners harder to move through doors?

They can be. Disconnect and secure power cords, battery packs, remotes, and side controls before moving. Power recliners are also heavier, so plan for two people.
