Quick answer

How big is a recliner?

A standard recliner is about 35 in wide, 36 in deep, and 40 in tall (89 × 91 × 102 cm). Check whether yours fits through your door, up the stairs, in an elevator, or in your car below.

On moving day

Moving tips.

  1. 01Lock the recliner mechanism in the closed position using the built-in latch or by securing with a strap.
  2. 02Remove the back if the model allows — many recliners have a back that lifts off with lever releases.
  3. 03Keep the recliner upright during transport to avoid damaging the internal mechanism.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Your recliner's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard recliner runs about 40" tall, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
  2. 02The smallest face of the recliner and its diagonal. Many pieces only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
  3. 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a recliner, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
  4. 04The recliner's weight, especially for solid-wood pieces, so you know how many people and what equipment the move needs.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the room the recliner is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
  2. ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A recliner that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
  3. ⚠Leaving legs, doors, drawers, or cushions on. Removing them often saves the few inches that decide the fit for a recliner.
  4. ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact recliner. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Will a recliner fit through a standard door?

Yes. At 35 inches wide and 36 inches deep, a standard recliner fits through a 36-inch doorway upright. For narrower 32-inch doors, tilt the recliner slightly to one side.

    01
  • How much space does a recliner need behind it?

Traditional recliners need 12-18 inches of wall clearance behind them to fully recline. Wall-hugger recliners need only 3-4 inches.

    02
  • How heavy is a recliner?

Standard recliners weigh 80-130 pounds. Power recliners with built-in motors can weigh up to 175 pounds.
