Run a check
Will it fit?
On moving day
Moving tips.
- 01Remove drawers to lighten the load and prevent them from sliding out during transport.
- 02Wrap in a moving blanket or stretch wrap to protect the finish.
- 03Nightstands are small enough to fit in a car trunk — no moving truck needed.
Measure smart
What to measure.
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
- 01Your nightstand's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard nightstand runs about 26" tall, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
- 02The smallest face of the nightstand and its diagonal. Many pieces only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
- 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a nightstand, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
- 04The nightstand's weight, especially for solid-wood pieces, so you know how many people and what equipment the move needs.
Don't make these
Common mistakes.
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
- ⚠Measuring the room the nightstand is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
- ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A nightstand that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
- ⚠Leaving legs, doors, drawers, or cushions on. Removing them often saves the few inches that decide the fit for a nightstand.
- ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact nightstand. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.
Frequently asked
Questions we keep getting.
How tall should a nightstand be?
A nightstand should be within 2 inches of the top of your mattress. For a standard bed setup (mattress top at 25 inches), a 24-26 inch nightstand is ideal.
01Can you fit a nightstand in a car?
Yes. At 24 by 16 by 26 inches, a standard nightstand fits in the back seat or trunk of most sedans and easily in any SUV.
02How heavy is a nightstand?
Standard nightstands weigh 25-50 pounds. Solid wood models are heavier; particleboard is lighter.
