Run a check
Will it fit?
On moving day
Moving tips.
- 01Remove all drawers before moving — this reduces weight by 40-60 pounds and prevents damage.
- 02Wrap the dresser in moving blankets or stretch wrap to protect the finish.
- 03Carry the dresser on its back (face up) to prevent tipping — never on its side if drawers are still in.
- 04Use furniture sliders on hardwood floors to avoid scratching.
Measure smart
What to measure.
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
- 01Your dresser's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard dresser runs about 60" wide, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
- 02The smallest face of the dresser and its diagonal. Many pieces only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
- 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a dresser, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
- 04The dresser's weight, especially for solid-wood pieces, so you know how many people and what equipment the move needs.
Don't make these
Common mistakes.
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
- ⚠Measuring the room the dresser is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
- ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A dresser that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
- ⚠Leaving legs, doors, drawers, or cushions on. Removing them often saves the few inches that decide the fit for a dresser.
- ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact dresser. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.
Frequently asked
Questions we keep getting.
Will a dresser fit through a standard doorway?
Yes. A standard dresser at 60 inches wide and 18 inches deep can fit through a 32-inch doorway when tilted on its end (18 inches becomes the width). Most dressers move easily through standard doors.
01How heavy is a standard dresser?
A standard 6-drawer dresser weighs 100-200 pounds depending on material. Solid wood dressers are on the heavier end, while laminate or MDF dressers are lighter.
02Should you remove dresser drawers before moving?
Yes. Removing drawers reduces the weight significantly (each drawer can weigh 10-20 pounds) and prevents them from sliding out during transport.
03Can one person move a dresser?
A small dresser on a furniture dolly can be moved by one person on flat ground. For stairs or doorways, always use two people for safety.
