Whether it fits comes down to the measurements most people skip.

Real openings run about 1 to 2 inches under the labeled size, and a single inch can flip the result. Check your own measurements before you buy or move.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Cargo length seats folded vs. seats up: folding the rear seats grows usable length from 30 to 42 inches up to 60 to 90 inches, depending on whether the SUV is compact, midsize, or full size
  2. 02Liftgate opening vs. interior cargo: the opening is usually 4 to 8 inches narrower and shorter than the cargo area inside, so a boxy item can clear the space but not the opening
  3. 03Width between the wheel wells: the wells pinch usable floor width to about 40 to 42 inches, well under the 45 to 50 inches higher up, and that is the real limit for flat items like a mattress or a tabletop
  4. 04Load floor height and opening height: the load floor sits 28 to 32 inches off the ground and the opening is 30 to 34 inches tall, which decides whether a tall appliance can stand up inside

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring cargo length with the seats up: most published SUV cargo figures assume the rear seats are folded, so always measure in the configuration you will actually load
  2. ⚠Trusting the maximum cargo volume number: cubic feet is measured to the roof and includes odd corners, so a large boxy item often will not fit even when the volume looks generous
  3. ⚠Ignoring the wheel wells: a flat item that matches the widest part of the cargo area still may not sit flat on the floor, where the wells cut the width to about 40 to 42 inches
  4. ⚠Forgetting the third row and headrests: a folded third row can leave a raised step or gap, and rear headrests can block a long item from sliding forward

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • How long an item fits in an SUV with the seats folded?

It depends on the SUV size. A compact SUV such as a RAV4 or CR-V gives about 60 to 68 inches of flat length with the rear seats folded. A midsize SUV such as a Highlander or Explorer gives about 70 to 80 inches. A full size SUV such as a Tahoe or Suburban gives about 80 to 96 inches. Measure from the back of the front seats to the closed liftgate.

    01
  • Will a queen mattress fit in an SUV?

A queen mattress is 60 by 80 inches. It will not lie flat in most SUVs because the width between the wheel wells is only about 40 to 42 inches. A queen fits on its side in a midsize or full size SUV, or flat in a large three row SUV with every seat down. A twin at 38 by 75 inches fits flat in most midsize SUVs with the rear seats folded.

    02
  • What is the difference between cargo volume and usable length?

Cargo volume in cubic feet is measured to the roof and counts every corner, so it overstates what a single rigid item can use. Usable length is the flat run from the seats to the liftgate at floor level. For furniture and boxes, measure the length, the width between the wheel wells, and the opening, not the volume.

    03
  • Should I load a long item diagonally?

Yes. Loading an item corner first at a 30 to 45 degree angle uses the cargo diagonal, which is 15 to 20 percent longer than the straight length. Fold one side of a split rear seat to open a diagonal channel for long, narrow items such as a bookshelf or a rolled rug.
