Why Standard Furniture Dimensions Matter

Knowing standard furniture dimensions lets you plan before you buy — checking door clearance, hallway turning radius, elevator fit, and stair navigation using typical dimensions even before you've selected a specific piece.

These are industry-standard ranges. Individual pieces vary — always check the specific product dimensions before a move.

Sofas and Couches

  • Loveseat: 52–63" wide × 30–36" deep × 30–36" tall
  • 3-seat sofa: 72–84" wide × 32–40" deep × 30–36" tall
  • Sectional (per section): 55–75" wide × 34–40" deep × 30–36" tall
  • Sleeper sofa: 72–90" wide × 36–42" deep × 34–38" tall
  • Apartment sofa: 60–72" wide × 28–32" deep × 30–34" tall
  • Chaise lounge: 60–72" wide × 28–36" deep × 28–34" tall

The critical moving dimension for sofas is depth — this determines whether the sofa fits through standard 30–36 inch doorways.

Mattresses

  • Twin: 38" × 75" × 8–14" thick
  • Twin XL: 38" × 80" × 8–14" thick
  • Full / Double: 54" × 75" × 8–14" thick
  • Queen: 60" × 80" × 10–14" thick
  • King: 76" × 80" × 10–14" thick
  • California King: 72" × 84" × 10–14" thick

Mattresses are flexible — they can bend to navigate stairs and compress slightly for tight doorways. Box springs and foundations are rigid and often the harder item to move.

Bed Frames

  • Platform bed (queen): 63–65" wide × 83–86" long × 14–18" tall (no headboard), 40–60" with headboard
  • Sleigh bed (queen): 65–68" wide × 85–90" long × 48–56" headboard height
  • Four-poster (queen): 65–68" wide × 85–90" long × 60–84" post height

Bed frames are almost always disassembled for moves. The headboard is typically the largest single piece — check bed frame through door clearance for the headboard specifically.

Tables

  • Round dining (4-seat): 42–48" diameter × 28–30" tall
  • Rectangular dining (6-seat): 60–72" long × 36–42" wide × 28–30" tall
  • Rectangular dining (8-seat): 72–96" long × 36–44" wide × 28–30" tall
  • Coffee table: 36–54" long × 18–24" wide × 16–20" tall
  • End table: 18–24" × 18–24" × 22–26" tall

Dining tables with removable legs become flat boards that navigate most doorways and hallways easily. Always remove legs for a move.

Desks

  • Writing desk: 42–60" wide × 20–24" deep × 28–30" tall
  • Computer desk: 48–72" wide × 24–30" deep × 28–30" tall
  • Executive desk: 60–72" wide × 30–36" deep × 28–30" tall
  • L-shaped desk: Two sections typically 48–60" × 24" each, connected
  • Standing desk: 48–72" wide × 24–30" deep × 28–48" tall (adjustable)

Most desks are wide but not deep — they fit through standard 30-inch doors on their side. L-shaped desks need to be separated at the joint.

Dressers and Storage

  • Standard dresser (6-drawer): 54–62" wide × 16–20" deep × 32–36" tall
  • Tall dresser / highboy: 36–40" wide × 18–20" deep × 48–54" tall
  • Nightstand: 18–24" wide × 16–20" deep × 24–28" tall
  • Armoire / wardrobe: 36–48" wide × 20–24" deep × 60–72" tall
  • Bookshelf (standard): 30–36" wide × 10–14" deep × 72–84" tall

Always remove drawers before moving dressers — they slide out and make the piece lighter and less likely to tip. Check bookshelf through door clearance for tall bookshelves.

Appliances

  • Refrigerator (standard): 30–36" wide × 30–35" deep × 65–71" tall
  • Refrigerator (counter-depth): 30–36" wide × 24–25" deep × 68–72" tall
  • Washer: 27" wide × 27–32" deep × 36–42" tall
  • Dryer: 27" wide × 27–32" deep × 36–42" tall
  • Dishwasher: 24" wide × 24" deep × 34" tall
  • Range / oven: 30" wide × 25–28" deep × 36" tall (freestanding)

Appliances are rigid and heavy — they can't be tilted easily or disassembled. Check fridge through door and washer through door clearance carefully. See also vehicle cargo dimensions if transporting by car.

Using These Dimensions

For pre-purchase planning:

  1. Look up the typical dimensions for the furniture type you want
  2. Measure your doorways, hallways, stairs, and elevators
  3. Run the check at ItemFits using the standard dimensions
  4. Once you find a specific piece, re-check with the exact product dimensions

For complete reference guides on spaces rather than furniture, see door sizes, stair types, elevator dimensions, vehicle cargo, and furniture dimensions.

FAQ

Are IKEA dimensions smaller than standard?

IKEA sofas tend to be on the compact end of the range (many are 28–32 inches deep), making them easier to move through narrow doorways. Their bookshelves and storage are standard sizes. Their bed frames are designed for standard mattress sizes. IKEA furniture is also designed for flat-pack shipping, which makes initial delivery through tight spaces much easier.

Why do furniture dimensions vary so much?

There are no mandatory sizing standards for furniture (unlike mattresses, which follow industry-standard dimensions). A "3-seat sofa" from one manufacturer might be 72 inches long, while another's is 96 inches. Always check the specific product dimensions — never assume "standard" means a specific number.
