Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01The ladder collapsed length, printed on the label or in the manual
  2. 02Cargo length with the rear seats folded and the front seat forward
  3. 03Roof length and rack crossbar spread if it rides on top
  4. 04The ladder width, usually 18 to 20 inches

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Using the extended length instead of the collapsed length
  2. ⚠Assuming any extension ladder fits inside an SUV
  3. ⚠Overloading a roof rack past its rated crossbar limit
  4. ⚠Not tying down both the front and rear of a roof load

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Will a 24 foot extension ladder fit in an SUV?

Not inside. A 24 foot ladder collapses to about 13.5 feet, far longer than any SUV cargo area, so it has to ride on a roof rack with front and rear tie-downs.

    01
  • What is the collapsed length of an extension ladder?

Roughly half the extended length plus the section overlap. A 16 foot ladder collapses to about 9 feet, a 20 foot to about 11.5 feet, and a 24 foot to about 13.5 feet. Check the label for the exact number.

    02
  • Can any extension ladder fit inside an SUV?

Only the smallest. A collapsed length near 7 to 8 feet can angle into a large SUV with the seats down; anything longer needs a roof rack.
