SUV Cargo Capacity for Moving: What Can You Actually Fit?

SUVs range from 30 to 145 cubic feet of cargo space. Here's what that translates to in real furniture — and which SUVs are best for hauling.

SUVs Are the Unsung Heroes of Small Moves

You don't always need a moving truck. For a single large item — a mattress, a piece of flat-pack furniture, a new appliance — your SUV might be all you need. But "SUV" covers everything from a compact crossover to a full-size Suburban, with cargo capacity varying by 5x.

SUV Cargo Dimensions by Category

Compact Crossovers (30–35 cu ft behind 2nd row)

Examples: Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, Mazda CX-30

  • Cargo length: 28–32 inches (seats up), 55–60 inches (seats down)
  • Cargo width: 38–42 inches between wheel wells
  • Cargo height: 26–30 inches

Good for: Small boxes, flat-pack furniture boxes, nightstands, chairs. A twin mattress fits with seats folded.

Midsize SUVs (40–75 cu ft behind 2nd row)

Examples: Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Hyundai Tucson

  • Cargo length: 33–38 inches (seats up), 67–73 inches (seats down)
  • Cargo width: 40–45 inches between wheel wells
  • Cargo height: 28–33 inches

Good for: Full and twin mattresses (seats down), small dressers, box springs, most flat-pack furniture. Check exact fit for queen mattresses — some midsize SUVs handle them, others don't.

Full-Size SUVs (80–145 cu ft behind 2nd row)

Examples: Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia

  • Cargo length: 45–50 inches (3rd row up), 90–100 inches (all seats down)
  • Cargo width: 48–52 inches between wheel wells
  • Cargo height: 32–38 inches

Good for: Queen mattresses, small couches, large appliance boxes, multiple pieces of furniture. A Suburban with all seats down approaches the capacity of a small cargo van.

Can You Fit a Mattress in an SUV?

The most common SUV moving question. Here's the breakdown:

  • Twin (38" × 75"): Fits in most midsize SUVs with seats down
  • Full (54" × 75"): Fits in larger midsize and all full-size SUVs with seats down
  • Queen (60" × 80"): Tight fit even in full-size SUVs — check your specific vehicle
  • King (76" × 80"): Won't fit inside most SUVs — need a pickup bed, van, or truck

Use the mattress in SUV calculator with your exact vehicle's cargo dimensions. The difference between "fits" and "doesn't fit" is often 2–3 inches.

The Cargo Opening Problem

Even when cargo space is large enough, the liftgate opening can be the bottleneck:

  • Liftgate height is usually 2–6 inches shorter than the interior cargo height
  • Liftgate width is narrower than the interior cargo width (wheel wells don't intrude at the opening)
  • Some SUVs have a raised cargo floor that reduces effective height

Measure the liftgate opening, not just the interior dimensions, when checking if a specific item will fit.

Tips for Hauling Furniture in an SUV

  • Fold all rear seats flat: This is non-negotiable for anything longer than 36 inches
  • Remove headrests: They prevent seats from folding fully flat in some models
  • Use the front passenger seat: For long items like curtain rods or shelving boards, fold the passenger seat forward
  • Protect the interior: Moving blankets or a cargo liner prevents scratches from furniture edges
  • Secure the load: Use ratchet straps attached to cargo tie-down hooks — loose furniture slides and causes damage

When an SUV Isn't Enough

If your item won't fit in the SUV, the next steps up are:

  • Pickup truck: Open bed eliminates the cargo opening constraint — check pickup capacity
  • Cargo van: Higher roof and wider opening than any SUV
  • Roof rack: Mattresses and flat items can ride on top — secure with ratchet straps through the vehicle, not just the rack

Compare all options in the vehicle cargo dimensions reference.

FAQ

Which SUV has the most cargo space?

The Chevrolet Suburban leads with 145 cubic feet (all seats down). The Ford Expedition Max and GMC Yukon XL are close behind. Among midsize SUVs, the Volkswagen Atlas and Kia Telluride offer the most space.

Can I fit a queen mattress in a RAV4?

The Toyota RAV4 has about 69 inches of cargo length with seats down and 42 inches of width. A queen mattress is 60 × 80 inches. It's tight but potentially possible if angled — use the calculator with your RAV4's exact dimensions to check.
