- 01Your hot tub/spa's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard hot tub/spa runs about 84" wide, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
- 02The smallest face of the hot tub/spa and its diagonal. Many appliances only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
- 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a hot tub/spa, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
- 04The hot tub/spa's weight and whether doors or shelves detach, so you know how many people, what dolly, and whether it clears on its side.

An empty hot tub weighs 500-900 pounds depending on size and construction. Filled with water, it weighs 3,000-6,000 pounds. Always drain completely and disconnect before moving.
01Can a hot tub fit through a gate or doorway?
Most standard hot tubs (84 x 84 inches) will NOT fit through a standard 36-inch doorway or 36-inch gate. You typically need at least a 40-inch opening or must bring the tub over a fence or through a removable fence panel.
02How many people does it take to move a hot tub?
A minimum of 4-6 strong people or a professional crew with a crane or specialized dolly. Hot tubs are extremely heavy and awkward even when empty.
03Do you need a crane to move a hot tub?
For backyards without wide access, a crane is often the only option. This typically costs $500-$1,500 for the crane service alone.
04How much clearance does a hot tub need on a deck?
Allow at least 12-18 inches of clearance on all sides for maintenance access and air circulation. Also verify the deck can support the total filled weight (3,000-6,000 lbs).
