Quick answer

How big is a hot tub/spa?

A standard hot tub/spa is about 84 in wide, 84 in deep, and 36 in tall (213 × 213 × 91 cm). Check whether yours fits through your door, up the stairs, in an elevator, or in your car below.

On moving day

Moving tips.

  1. 01Drain the hot tub completely and disconnect all electrical and plumbing connections before moving.
  2. 02Hot tubs typically require professional movers with specialized equipment — do not attempt to DIY.
  3. 03Verify access paths, gate widths, and fence panels that may need to be removed.
  4. 04Check that the new location can structurally support the weight — a filled hot tub can weigh 3+ tons.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Your hot tub/spa's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard hot tub/spa runs about 84" wide, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
  2. 02The smallest face of the hot tub/spa and its diagonal. Many appliances only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
  3. 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a hot tub/spa, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
  4. 04The hot tub/spa's weight and whether doors or shelves detach, so you know how many people, what dolly, and whether it clears on its side.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the room the hot tub/spa is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
  2. ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A hot tub/spa that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
  3. ⚠Leaving doors, shelves, or feet on. Detaching them often buys back the inch or two that decides whether the hot tub/spa fits.
  4. ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact hot tub/spa. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • How heavy is a hot tub?

An empty hot tub weighs 500-900 pounds depending on size and construction. Filled with water, it weighs 3,000-6,000 pounds. Always drain completely and disconnect before moving.

    01
  • Can a hot tub fit through a gate or doorway?

Most standard hot tubs (84 x 84 inches) will NOT fit through a standard 36-inch doorway or 36-inch gate. You typically need at least a 40-inch opening or must bring the tub over a fence or through a removable fence panel.

    02
  • How many people does it take to move a hot tub?

A minimum of 4-6 strong people or a professional crew with a crane or specialized dolly. Hot tubs are extremely heavy and awkward even when empty.

    03
  • Do you need a crane to move a hot tub?

For backyards without wide access, a crane is often the only option. This typically costs $500-$1,500 for the crane service alone.

    04
  • How much clearance does a hot tub need on a deck?

Allow at least 12-18 inches of clearance on all sides for maintenance access and air circulation. Also verify the deck can support the total filled weight (3,000-6,000 lbs).

Why a Tape Measure Isn't Enough to Know If Something Will Fit

Tape measures validate size. Moving furniture requires validating motion — through doors, around turns, and up stairs. Here's why dimensions alone don't answer the real question.
