ItemFits Fit Check Dataset & Statistics

Aggregated statistics from every fit decision the ItemFits checker has recorded: what people try to fit, where they need it to fit, how often the answer is no, and how close the fits are. These figures describe the questions people brought to ItemFits, not furniture in general.

Data through September 27, 2026 · Updated as new data is validated · Publisher: ItemFits LLC

Fit outcomes

More answers are won’t fit than fit

A definite answer is a fit or a won’t fit. Requests for a missing measurement are counted as fit decisions but never as answers, so they are shown separately and left out of every share of answers.

Sofas, mattresses and TVs lead

Item names are grouped into families by keyword. Names too generic to place (“item”, “stuff”) are left out rather than guessed, and families with fewer than 10 fit decisions are not listed.

Where people need things to fit

Vehicles, doorways and routes

Every fit decision is about one kind of space. Each checker route maps to exactly one space type.

Vehicle fit

Most fit checks are about a vehicle

The checker tests a vehicle’s cargo opening and its cargo space as separate constraints, for each seat configuration in the catalog.

Clearance

How close the fits are

Clearance is the room to spare at the tightest point, in the orientation the checker chose. Only fits with a recorded clearance are counted.

A tape measure read to the nearest quarter inch leaves little margin at these clearances. See how to measure accurately and the clearance formulas.

Where people ask from

Mostly the United States, not only

Locations are recorded as country and region only, never a precise location. A request is one turn of a conversation, so these shares are not counts of people.

Not yet published

What we measure but do not publish yet

A figure built on a field that is recorded for only part of the data would describe that part, not the whole. These breakdowns stay unpublished until the instrumentation behind them is complete.

Common failure points (opening, turn, height, width, depth)

The constraint that stopped an item is recorded on 29% of won’t-fit answers so far. A breakdown built on that share would describe the recorded few, not the whole, so it stays unpublished until coverage passes 80%.

Dimension confidence (measured, manufacturer, catalog, standard, estimated)

Where each size came from is recorded on 47% of fit decisions so far. We will publish the split once it is recorded on at least 80%.

Vehicle opening vs. interior failures

The checker tests the cargo opening and the cargo space separately, but the result does not yet record which of the two failed.

Vehicle seat configuration

Every cargo configuration in the vehicle catalog records its seat state, but the configuration an answer used is not yet saved with every vehicle pick, so a seat-state split would leave part of the picks out.

Retail storefront metrics

Fit checks inside retailers’ stores, add-to-cart after a check, and returns need more live stores before a figure means anything. See the methodology page.
