- 01Your upright piano's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard upright piano runs about 58" wide, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
- 02The smallest face of the upright piano and its diagonal. Many pieces only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
- 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a upright piano, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
- 04The upright piano's weight, especially for solid-wood pieces, so you know how many people and what equipment the move needs.

- ⚠Measuring the room the upright piano is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
- ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A upright piano that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
- ⚠Leaving legs, doors, drawers, or cushions on. Removing them often saves the few inches that decide the fit for a upright piano.
- ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact upright piano. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.

How much does an upright piano weigh?
A standard upright piano weighs 300-500 pounds. Larger studio uprights can reach 600 pounds. This is why professional piano movers are strongly recommended.
01Will an upright piano fit through a standard doorway?
Yes. At 58 inches wide and 24 inches deep, an upright piano fits through a 36-inch doorway when rolled straight through on a piano dolly. For 32-inch doors, you may need to angle it slightly.
02Can you move a piano on its side?
It is not recommended. Moving a piano on its side can damage the internal hammers, strings, and soundboard. Always keep it upright and use a specialized piano dolly.
03Do you need to tune a piano after moving it?
Yes. Pianos go out of tune when moved due to vibration and changes in humidity and temperature. Wait 2-3 weeks for the piano to acclimate before scheduling a tuning.
04How many people does it take to move an upright piano?
At minimum 3-4 strong adults with proper equipment (piano dolly, straps, ramp). Professional piano movers are highly recommended due to the weight and fragility.
