Quick answer

How big is a upright piano?

A standard upright piano is about 58 in wide, 24 in deep, and 48 in tall (147 × 61 × 122 cm). Check whether yours fits through your door, up the stairs, in an elevator, or in your car below.

On moving day

Moving tips.

  1. 01Hire professional piano movers — pianos are extremely heavy, delicate, and expensive to repair if damaged.
  2. 02Never roll a piano on its casters on anything but a smooth, flat surface — use a piano board and dolly.
  3. 03Close and lock the keyboard lid to protect the keys during transport.
  4. 04Wrap the entire piano in moving blankets secured with straps, not tape (tape can damage the finish).

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Your upright piano's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard upright piano runs about 58" wide, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
  2. 02The smallest face of the upright piano and its diagonal. Many pieces only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
  3. 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a upright piano, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
  4. 04The upright piano's weight, especially for solid-wood pieces, so you know how many people and what equipment the move needs.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the room the upright piano is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
  2. ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A upright piano that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
  3. ⚠Leaving legs, doors, drawers, or cushions on. Removing them often saves the few inches that decide the fit for a upright piano.
  4. ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact upright piano. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • How much does an upright piano weigh?

A standard upright piano weighs 300-500 pounds. Larger studio uprights can reach 600 pounds. This is why professional piano movers are strongly recommended.

    01
  • Will an upright piano fit through a standard doorway?

Yes. At 58 inches wide and 24 inches deep, an upright piano fits through a 36-inch doorway when rolled straight through on a piano dolly. For 32-inch doors, you may need to angle it slightly.

    02
  • Can you move a piano on its side?

It is not recommended. Moving a piano on its side can damage the internal hammers, strings, and soundboard. Always keep it upright and use a specialized piano dolly.

    03
  • Do you need to tune a piano after moving it?

Yes. Pianos go out of tune when moved due to vibration and changes in humidity and temperature. Wait 2-3 weeks for the piano to acclimate before scheduling a tuning.

    04
  • How many people does it take to move an upright piano?

At minimum 3-4 strong adults with proper equipment (piano dolly, straps, ramp). Professional piano movers are highly recommended due to the weight and fragility.

Why a Tape Measure Isn't Enough to Know If Something Will Fit

Tape measures validate size. Moving furniture requires validating motion — through doors, around turns, and up stairs. Here's why dimensions alone don't answer the real question.
