Standard standing desk dimensions.
Standard electric sit-stand desk at maximum height (50 inches). Seated height is about 28 inches. Widths range from 42 to 72 inches. The frame and motor add significant weight.
Run a check
Will it fit?
On moving day
Moving tips.
- 01Lower the desk to its minimum height and unplug the power cable before moving.
- 02Separate the desktop from the motorized frame — the frame is the heaviest part.
- 03Keep all bolts, screws, and the control box in a labeled bag.
- 04Electric frames are fragile — do not drop or stack heavy items on the motor housing.
Measure smart
What to measure.
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
- 01Your standing desk's width, height, and depth at their widest points — including handles, feet, and any fixed trim. A standard standing desk runs about 50" tall, but compact and oversized versions vary by several inches, so measure yours rather than trusting the label.
- 02The smallest face of the standing desk and its diagonal. Many pieces only clear a tight opening when tilted, and that turns on the diagonal, not the flat width.
- 03Every opening on the route, not just the destination room — the door, the hallway and any turn, the stair width, and the elevator. "Through a Door" is the check people run most for a standing desk, but the tightest point on the whole path is what decides the move.
- 04The standing desk's weight, especially for solid-wood pieces, so you know how many people and what equipment the move needs.
Don't make these
Common mistakes.
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
- ⚠Measuring the room the standing desk is headed for but forgetting the doorway, hallway turn, or stair landing it has to pass through first.
- ⚠Ignoring the diagonal. A standing desk that looks too wide for a door often clears it tilted — but only if you measured the diagonal, not the flat face.
- ⚠Leaving legs, doors, drawers, or cushions on. Removing them often saves the few inches that decide the fit for a standing desk.
- ⚠Assuming a published size matches your exact standing desk. Apartment, compact, and oversized models differ by several inches.
Frequently asked
Questions we keep getting.
What is the height range of a standing desk?
Most electric standing desks adjust from 25-50 inches. For reference, the ideal standing desk height for someone 5'10" is about 44 inches (elbow height).
01How heavy is a standing desk?
Electric standing desks weigh 70-130 pounds due to the steel frame and motor. The desktop itself typically weighs 25-40 pounds. Disassemble before moving.
02How much space does a standing desk need?
Allow the same space as a regular desk plus extra depth behind for the chair when seated (at least 42 inches of clearance). Standing desks also need wall clearance for cable management.
03Can you move a standing desk without disassembling it?
Not recommended. Lower the desk to its minimum height, then separate the top from the frame. The frame with motors is the heaviest piece (50-80 lbs).
