Context

About the Tesla Model 3 cargo area

The Model 3 is a sedan, not a hatchback, so its trunk opens through a conventional lid rather than a tall liftback. That matters for furniture: the trunk opening is narrower than the volume suggests, and a bulky or boxy item is harder to thread through the lid than the cubic-foot figure implies. A deep under-floor well and a front trunk add usable space for smaller items and charging cables.

Tesla publishes a combined cargo figure rather than a separate seats-folded number, so the most reliable published values are the total capacity and the frunk capacity below.

The cargo dimensions and verdicts in the table above are unchanged; this context is descriptive only.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01The cargo length with the rear seats folded flat, from the seatbacks to the closed hatch or trunk lid.
  2. 02The width between the wheel wells, which is usually narrower than the widest point of the cargo floor.
  3. 03The hatch or liftgate opening, since the load has to clear it first; a sedan trunk lid is narrower than its volume suggests.
  4. 04The interior height at the load point, remembering a sloping roof or liftgate steals height toward the back.
  5. 05The item's smallest face, because angling it on the diagonal often rescues a fit the straight-in measurement fails.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Using the brochure cargo volume in cubic feet instead of the real length, width, and height the item needs.
  2. ⚠Measuring the floor at its widest and forgetting the wheel wells pinch it in the middle.
  3. ⚠Folding the seats but leaving the headrests on, which steals usable height.
  4. ⚠Assuming every trim is the same; a panoramic moonroof or an under-floor hybrid battery can cut cargo room.
  5. ⚠Ignoring that a long item may clear on the diagonal even when it fails flat.
