A 12×12 room is the recommended minimum for a king bed. See the clearances, nightstand options, and dresser placement.
Whether it fits depends on measurements most people get wrong.
Room width (144") minus king bed width (76") = 68" total side clearance (34" per side)
Item: King mattress: 76"×80" (6'4"×6'8")
Space: 12×12 room: 144"×144" (144 sq ft)
Actual clear openings are usually 1–2″ smaller than the labeled size.
Your exact dimensions probably aren't "standard." Small measurement errors cause big problems — 1 inch can be the difference between fitting and getting stuck.
Verdicts are calculated by comparing all 6 item orientations against the space dimensions using verified building code standards. See our methodology

A 12×12 room is considered the recommended minimum for a king bed. You get 34" of clearance on each side (enough for nightstands plus walking) and 64" at the foot (enough for a dresser). It is comfortable but not spacious.
In a 12×12 room with a king bed you can comfortably fit: two nightstands (up to 24" wide each), a dresser at the foot of the bed (up to 60" wide × 20" deep), and still have 24"+ walking paths everywhere.
A king mattress (76"×80" = 42.2 sq ft) takes up 29% of a 12×12 room (144 sq ft). With the frame, it is about 32%. That leaves roughly 98 sq ft for other furniture and walking paths — well within the 60% rule.
It is possible but tight. Place the bed against one wall and a compact desk (42–48" wide) against the opposite wall. You will have about 22" of open floor between the bed foot and the desk chair — just enough for a chair but no room to walk past while someone is seated.
