For flat-pack bookcases (IKEA Billy, Kallax, etc.), disassembly is often the easiest approach — they break down into panels that individually fit through any door. Solid wood bookcases typically cannot be disassembled and must be carried whole. Remove all shelves and drawers regardless.
Lay the bookshelf on its back so the depth (10–14") faces up. Slide it through the doorway depth-first. For units wider than the door, angle the bookshelf diagonally — a 36" wide bookcase at a 30° tilt only needs about 31" of door width. Have a helper support the top end.
The IKEA Billy bookcase is 31.5" wide × 11" deep × 80" tall. It fits through a standard 32" door if laid on its back (depth becomes height at 11"). The 80" height matches most door frames exactly, so tilting slightly may be needed if carrying upright.
Tilt the bookshelf diagonally or lay it on its back. If the depth is 12" and you tilt it, the effective width shrinks significantly. For built-in or extra-wide units (40"+), consider removing the door and hinges for an extra 1.5–2" of clearance, or check for a wider entry point like a patio door.
