Quick answer
Will it fit on moving day?
A couch delivery has 5 checkpoints: couch dimensions, front door, hallway path, stairs/elevator, and room door. Measure every point before ordering. The stairway landing and interior doorways are the most common failure points.

Step-by-step fit check.
Every constraint on the path, in order. Clear each one and the item makes it the whole way.
Step 1: Measure the Couch
🚪Before delivery, get exact dimensions: width, depth, height, and diagonal (corner-to-corner). Note whether the legs are removable and if the sofa is a single piece or sectional.

🚪Measure the front door clear width and height. Check for storm doors, screen doors, or vestibules that reduce usable space. Note the swing direction — can both doors be propped open?

↔️Walk the delivery path and measure every hallway width, corner turning radius, and tight spot. Mark any obstructions (light fixtures, fire extinguishers, radiators) that reduce clearance.

🪜If the couch goes upstairs: measure stairway width, ceiling height at landings, and landing depth. If using an elevator: measure interior dimensions and door opening width.

🚪Measure the room doorway where the couch will live. Interior doors are often narrower (28–30 inches). Check for any immediate turns inside the room.

Measure smart
What to measure.
Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.
- 01Couch: width, depth, height, diagonal, and leg height
- 02Front door clear width and height (with and without storm door)
- 03Every hallway width along the delivery path
- 04Turning radius at every corner or bend
- 05Stairway width, landing depth, and ceiling clearance (or elevator interior dimensions)
- 06Final room door clear width and any vestibule turns
Don't make these
Common mistakes.
Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.
- ⚠Measuring only the front door and forgetting the delivery path has multiple checkpoints
- ⚠Ordering a sofa online without checking if it will fit through your specific entry path
- ⚠Not confirming whether the sofa is delivered as one piece or multiple pieces
- ⚠Forgetting to remove the front door hinges to gain extra clearance (saves many delivery failures)
Frequently asked
Questions we keep getting.
What if the delivery team says it will not fit?
Ask them to try removing the door from its hinges (gains 1.5–2 inches), removing the sofa legs (gains 4–6 inches of height), and tilting the sofa vertically. If it still does not fit, you may need to refuse delivery and exchange for a smaller size.
01Can I measure before ordering online?
Absolutely — and you should. Check the product dimensions (including packaging if applicable), then run each measurement against your entry path using our calculators. Most returns for online sofas are due to fit issues.
02What is the most common couch delivery failure point?
The stairway landing is the #1 failure point, followed by narrow interior doorways (especially bedroom doors). Hallway corners are #3. The front door rarely causes issues because it is usually the widest opening.
03Should I buy a sectional instead of a one-piece sofa?
If your delivery path has tight corners or narrow stairways, a sectional is often the better choice. Each section is smaller and lighter, making it easier to navigate the full path. Modular sofas offer even more flexibility.
