Moving a Washer from Truck to Laundry Room

Quick answer

Will it fit on moving day?

A standard washer (27" wide, 150–200 lbs) fits through most doors and hallways. The utility room or basement door is the most common bottleneck at 28–30 inches. Use an appliance dolly, install transit bolts for transport, and leave 4–6 inches behind the unit for hookups.

The full route

Step-by-step fit check.

Every constraint on the path, in order. Clear each one and the item makes it the whole way.

1

Step 1: Unload from Vehicle

🚗

Standard washers (27" wide, 150–200 lbs) arrive on a delivery truck or in a personal vehicle. Use an appliance dolly to unload — never lift a washer without one. Keep the washer upright and install transit bolts if transporting in a personal vehicle.

Step 2: Door Entry

🚪

Standard washers at 27" wide fit through most 32" doors with clearance to spare. Measure the clear width of every door between the driveway and laundry room — the utility room or basement door is often the tightest at 28–30 inches.

Step 3: Hallway to Laundry Room

↔️

Roll the washer on the appliance dolly through the hallway. Any 90-degree turns need corridor width of at least 28 inches (the washer depth). Check for low-hanging obstacles like pendant lights or ductwork.

Step 4: Final Placement

🚪

Position the washer in the laundry space with at least 1 inch of clearance on each side. Connect water supply hoses, the drain hose, and level the machine using the adjustable feet. Remove transit bolts before the first use.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Washer width, depth, and height
  2. 02Vehicle cargo area dimensions (if personal transport)
  3. 03Every door clear width from curb to laundry room
  4. 04Hallway width at narrowest point and at turns
  5. 05Laundry space width, depth, and height
  6. 06Distance from hookups to washer placement

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Forgetting to install transit bolts before transporting a washer in a personal vehicle — the drum can shift and cause internal damage
  2. ⚠Measuring only the front door and skipping the utility room door, which is often 28–30 inches wide
  3. ⚠Not leveling the washer after installation — an unlevel washer vibrates excessively and walks across the floor
  4. ⚠Forgetting to leave 4–6 inches behind the washer for water hoses and the drain connection

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Do I need transit bolts for delivery?

Yes — transit bolts secure the wash drum during transport to prevent internal damage. New washers ship with transit bolts installed. If moving an existing washer, reinstall the bolts (included with the original purchase) before transport. Remove them before first use at the new location.

    01
  • Will a standard washer fit through an interior door?

Standard washers are 27 inches wide. Most interior doors have 28–30 inches of clear width, so the fit is usually tight but possible. If the door is exactly 27 inches wide, you may need to remove the door from its hinges to gain 1.5–2 inches.

    02
  • Can I transport a washer in an SUV?

Yes — most mid-size and full-size SUVs can fit a standard washer with the rear seats folded flat. Secure the washer upright with ratchet straps and install transit bolts to protect the drum. Never lay a washer on its side during transport.

    03
  • How do I level a washer after installation?

Place a bubble level on top of the washer and adjust the front feet by turning them clockwise (lower) or counterclockwise (raise). The rear feet are usually self-leveling — tilt the washer forward slightly and let it drop back. Recheck with the level after adjusting.
