“Confirmed my 65" TV fits in the RAV4 before buying. Would've been stuck at the store.” — Weekend project

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01TV box dimensions — don't guess from the screen size. A "65-inch TV" has a 65" diagonal screen, but the box is approximately 60" W × 37" H × 8" D. Check the box label or the manufacturer's shipping specs for exact measurements
  2. 02Vehicle cargo opening width and height — this is the bottleneck, not the cargo area itself. Measure the narrowest point of the trunk lid, liftgate, or rear door opening. Sedan trunk openings are typically 35–42" wide, much narrower than the cargo space behind them
  3. 03Cargo area length with seats folded — measure from the back of the front seats to the tailgate with the rear seats folded flat. Also measure the width between the wheel wells, which is narrower than the total cargo width
  4. 04Rear door opening (for sedans) — if the trunk opening is too narrow, check whether the TV box fits through a rear passenger door. Measure the door opening width and diagonal. Many 55–65" TV boxes fit through rear doors angled slightly

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Confusing screen diagonal with box width — a "65-inch TV" has a 65" diagonal screen, but the box is ~60" wide, not 65". An "85-inch TV" box is ~78" wide. Always check the actual box dimensions before heading to the store
  2. ⚠Only measuring cargo area depth but not the opening — the cargo space behind the seats may be 40" deep, but the trunk or liftgate opening might only be 36" wide. The TV box has to fit through the opening first
  3. ⚠Assuming the TV won't fit in a sedan without checking the rear doors — many 55" and even some 65" TV boxes fit through a rear passenger door opening when angled, even if the trunk opening is too narrow
  4. ⚠Transporting the TV flat (screen face down or up) instead of upright — flat transport puts pressure on the LCD panel during vibration and bumps. TVs should stand upright, secured against a flat surface
  5. ⚠Removing the TV from its box to save space — the original box with fitted foam inserts absorbs shock from bumps and stops. Without the box, even a minor impact can crack the screen. The box adds 3–6" per dimension but is worth the space
  6. ⚠Leaving a TV in a hot or cold car for hours — LCD panels can be damaged below 32°F or above 100°F. If buying in winter, bring the boxed TV inside and let it reach room temperature before unboxing (condensation can damage electronics)

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • Which TV sizes fit in a sedan?

    A 43" TV box (~39" W × 25" H × 6" D) and 50" TV box (~46" W × 29" H × 6" D) fit easily in most sedan trunks. A 55" TV box (~52" W × 33" H × 7" D) fits in most sedans with rear seats folded — slide it through the trunk pass-through or a rear door. A 65" TV box (~60" W) is too wide for most sedan trunk openings (35–42" wide) but often fits through a rear passenger door angled diagonally. 75" and larger TVs generally do not fit in sedans.

    01
  • Will a 65-inch TV fit in an SUV?

Yes — a 65" TV box (~60" W × 37" H × 8" D) fits in most midsize and full-size SUVs (RAV4, CR-V, Highlander, Tahoe, etc.) with the rear seats folded. The SUV liftgate opening is typically 40–48" wide and 28–36" tall. Load the box upright through the liftgate and secure it against the back of the front seats. Compact SUVs (HR-V, Seltos) have narrower liftgates around 38–40" and may be a tight fit.

    02
  • Will a 75-inch or 85-inch TV fit in my vehicle?

A 75" TV box (~69" W × 42" H × 8" D) requires a midsize SUV, minivan, or pickup truck. It fits in vehicles like the Highlander, Pilot, Odyssey, Sienna, or any pickup bed. An 85" TV box (~78" W × 47" H × 9" D) needs a full-size SUV (Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition), minivan, or pickup truck — most midsize SUVs are too narrow. Pickup truck beds are the easiest option for 75"+ TVs.

    03
  • Should I transport a TV upright or flat?

Transport it upright whenever possible. LCD, OLED, and QLED panels are engineered to bear weight on their edges (that's how they mount on a wall) but not to withstand distributed pressure across the screen face. Laying a TV flat — especially face-down — risks cracking the panel from road vibration and bumps. Stand the box upright and brace it against a flat surface like the back of a seat.

    04
  • How do I secure a TV in a car?

Place the TV box upright with the screen face toward the back of the rear seats (or front passenger seat). Wedge soft items (pillows, blankets, rolled towels) on both sides to prevent sliding. Run a seatbelt or ratchet strap across the box to hold it in place. In a pickup truck, stand the box against the cab wall and secure it with ratchet straps. Never leave a TV unsecured — one hard brake can send it flying.

    05
  • Can I fit a TV in a hatchback?

Hatchbacks have wider rear openings than sedan trunks, making them better for TVs. Most hatchbacks (Golf, Mazda3 hatch, Impreza hatch, Civic hatch) can fit a 55" TV box with the rear seats folded. Some larger hatchbacks can fit a 65" box. Measure the hatch opening width — hatchback openings typically range from 38–44" wide, significantly better than the 35–40" of a sedan trunk lid.

    06
  • What if the TV box doesn't fit in my car?

Options: (1) Ask the store about delivery — many retailers offer free or low-cost delivery for large TVs. (2) Rent a cargo van or pickup truck for an hour from U-Haul, Home Depot, or Lowe's ($20–30). (3) Borrow an SUV or minivan. (4) For a sedan, try loading through the rear passenger door instead of the trunk — the opening is often wider and taller.
