Window Extraction for Moving: When and How to Remove a Window
Why Remove the Window?
A window with the sash in place has a clear opening that's 2–4 inches smaller than the rough opening. For a couch or mattress that's just barely too large, removing the sash provides exactly the extra clearance needed.
Window sash removal is temporary, non-destructive, and usually takes 5–15 minutes per window. It's a standard technique used by professional movers and delivery services.
Double-Hung Windows (Most Common)
The standard residential window with two vertical sliding panels:
- Unlock the sash locks (twist latches at the top of the lower sash)
- Raise the lower sash about 3 inches
- Look for tilt latches on the top corners of the lower sash — push them inward
- Tilt the sash top toward you while supporting it
- Lift the sash up and out of the side tracks — it should come free
- Repeat for the upper sash if needed (raise it down first, then tilt)
With both sashes removed, you have the full rough opening — typically 2–4 inches wider and taller than the opening with sashes in place.
Casement Windows (Crank-Out)
Casement windows swing outward on hinges:
- Open the window fully
- Disconnect the crank arm from the sash (usually a clip or pin at the connection point)
- Remove the hinge pins or unscrew the hinges from the frame
- Lift the sash out
Casement removal requires a screwdriver and may need two people for larger windows. The clear opening after removal is the full frame opening.
Sliding Windows (Horizontal)
Windows that slide left-right:
- Open the sliding panel fully
- Lift the panel straight up into the head track (there's usually extra space)
- Swing the bottom of the panel inward and out of the bottom track
- Remove the panel
The fixed panel usually stays in place. Removing the sliding panel gives you half the window's total width as clear opening.
Fixed (Picture) Windows
These don't open and aren't designed for easy removal. Removing a fixed window requires:
- Removing the interior stop molding
- Breaking the sealant between the glass unit and the frame
- Lifting the entire glass unit out
This is a professional job. Fixed window removal and reinstallation should be done by a window company or glazier. Cost: $100–$300 per window.
What Clear Opening to Expect
- Standard double-hung (36" wide nominal): Clear opening with sashes removed ≈ 33–34 inches wide × 56–58 inches tall
- Large double-hung (48" wide nominal): Clear opening ≈ 45–46 inches wide × 56–58 inches tall
- Standard casement (24" wide): Clear opening ≈ 22–23 inches wide × 45–48 inches tall
- Pair of casements (48" combined): Clear opening ≈ 44–46 inches wide × 45–48 inches tall
Use the window fit calculator to check whether your item fits the clear opening after sash removal.
Safety Precautions
- Support the sash: Window sashes are heavy (15–40 lbs) and can be awkward. Have a helper for large sashes.
- Mind the glass: Modern sashes have sealed glass units that are durable but not indestructible. Lay removed sashes flat on a padded surface.
- Secure the opening: An open window frame with no sash is a fall hazard. Keep people and pets away from the opening during the delivery.
- Weather protection: Complete the delivery and reinstall the sash before rain, extreme cold, or extreme heat arrives.
- Window screens: Remove the screen before the sash. Screens are fragile and easily bent.
Reinstallation
For double-hung windows, reinstallation is the reverse:
- Position the sash at an angle (bottom first into the track)
- Tilt the top up until the sash clicks into the side tracks
- Push the tilt latches outward until they click into position
- Test that the sash slides smoothly and the locks engage
The window should operate exactly as it did before removal. If it doesn't slide smoothly, the sash may not be fully seated in the tracks — lift and reseat it.
Check whether your item can also fit through other entry points: doors, hallways, or an elevator — window removal may not be necessary if an alternate route works.
FAQ
Will removing the window void my warranty?
No. Window sash removal is a designed feature of operable windows — it's how they're cleaned and maintained. As long as you don't damage the frame or glass during furniture delivery, the warranty is unaffected.
Can I remove a window in a rental apartment?
You can remove operable window sashes without landlord permission in most jurisdictions — it's a temporary, non-destructive action. If you need to remove a fixed window or damage the frame/trim, notify the landlord first.
