Will It Fit Through a Window?

Select an item below for a quick check, or enter custom dimensions to test any window opening.

This calculator determines if furniture and large items can fit through window openings — a common solution for high-rise apartments, narrow staircases, and tight-access deliveries. We account for window opening dimensions, removal of the sash or frame, exterior clearance for hoisting, and safety considerations for above-ground floors.

Three possible answers

Real verdicts, with the math behind them.

Every check returns one of three outcomes — with the dimensions, the constraints that mattered, and exactly how we reached the verdict.

✓Fits

Loveseat · sliding glass door

60×34×34 in through a 72×80 in sliding glass opening — fits with room to spare; no sash removal needed.

!Tight fit

Queen mattress · 36×60 double-hung

With sash removed, opening expands to 36×60. Mattress tilted on edge clears with 4″ to spare — professional hoist required for 2nd floor and above.

✕Does not fit

Upright fridge · 28×54 casement

36×72×30 in. Casement opens to 28″ width — 8″ short of the fridge width. Cannot fit through this window even with sash removed.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Window opening width and height with the sash fully open — this is the usable clearance, not the overall window frame size.
  2. 02Window sill height from the floor — determines your loading angle and whether you need exterior rigging.
  3. 03Whether the window sash can be removed — removing the sash typically adds 2–4 inches of clearance on each side.
  4. 04Exterior clearance and floor height — hoisting from ground level requires rigging equipment and clear access below the window.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring the window frame instead of the actual opening — the usable opening is 2–4 inches smaller than the frame dimensions.
  2. ⚠Forgetting that double-hung windows only open halfway unless the sash is removed.
  3. ⚠Not checking if the building allows window deliveries — many apartment buildings prohibit hoisting without prior approval and insurance.
  4. ⚠Assuming any window is large enough — standard double-hung windows (24–36" wide) are much smaller than most furniture pieces.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • What size are standard residential windows?

Standard double-hung windows are 24–36" wide × 36–60" tall. The usable opening (sash up) is only half the total height. Casement windows open wider. Picture windows don't open at all. Sliding glass doors (60–72" wide × 80" tall) offer the largest residential openings.

    01
  • Can I remove the window to get more clearance?

On double-hung and casement windows, the sash can usually be removed (tilt-in or unscrew the tracks). This converts the half-opening into the full frame opening. Some older windows require a professional to remove the sash. Always reinstall the sash after the move.

    02
  • How does furniture hoisting through a window work?

Professional movers use a block-and-tackle or motorized hoist attached to the window frame or a rooftop anchor. The furniture is wrapped in moving blankets, secured with straps, and lifted from ground level to the window. Cost ranges from $300–$1,000+ depending on floor height and item weight.

    03
  • Is it safe to hoist furniture through a window?

With professional movers, yes. Never attempt DIY hoisting above the first floor — the risk of injury and property damage is extreme. Professional hoisting companies carry liability insurance and use rated rigging equipment. Always clear the area below the window before any hoisting operation.
