Will It Fit in the Elevator?

Check whether a couch, mattress, fridge, dresser, piano, or other furniture fits in a passenger elevator, freight elevator, or apartment elevator.

This calculator helps answer searches like “will a couch fit in an elevator,” “will furniture fit in a passenger elevator,” and “what size elevator do I need for a couch.” Give it your item’s length, depth and height plus five elevator sizes: the door opening width and height, and the car’s inside width, depth and height, each with its unit. It checks the item through the door and inside the car, including tilting it, standing it on end and turning it as it goes in. It does not check weight; see the weight limits guide for that.

Example fit outcomes

Example verdicts, with the measurements behind them.

Each example lists every size the check used. Give the same five elevator sizes and your item’s three sizes, with units, and you get an answer in one step.

✓Fits

84 in sofa · 96 in tall elevator

Sofa 84 x 35 x 33 in. Car 68 in wide, 51 in deep, 96 in tall. Door 36 x 84 in. It fits, turned as it goes in, with about 2½ in to spare. In the same car at 90 in tall the check could not confirm a way in, which is why the car height matters.

!Tight fit

96 in board · 80 in tall elevator

Board 96 x 24 x 2 in. Car 68 in wide, 51 in deep, 80 in tall. Door 36 x 80 in. It fits only tilted corner to corner, with about ¼ in to spare. That is longer than the car floor, so the car height and depth decide it.

✕Does not fit

King mattress · 90 in tall elevator

King mattress 80 x 76 x 12 in. Car 68 in wide, 51 in deep, 90 in tall. Door 36 x 80 in. It cannot fit inside this car at any angle, so no way through the door helps. Ask the building about a freight elevator.

Measure smart

What to measure.

Four numbers decide nearly every fit check. Get these right and the rest follows.

  1. 01Door opening width. Open the doors fully and measure the clear gap between the two door edges at the narrowest point. Measure the gap you can carry through, not the outside frame.
  2. 02Door opening height. Measure from the floor at the threshold to the lowest point of the top of the opening.
  3. 03Car inside width. Measure wall to wall across the car, just above the handrail. If rails or wall pads stick out, note how far.
  4. 04Car inside depth. Measure from the back wall to the inside of the closed doors, also just above the handrail.
  5. 05Car inside height. Measure from the floor to the lowest thing on the ceiling, such as a light panel or a hatch.
  6. 06Your item’s length, depth and height at the widest points, including legs, handles and any packaging that stays on.
  7. 07Write the unit next to every number, such as 36 in, 91 cm or 0.91 m. A number with no unit can be read as the wrong unit.
  8. 08Why the car height and depth matter: a long item can be tilted, stood on end or turned as it goes in, so an item longer than the car floor can still fit when the car is tall or deep enough. The check tries those positions for you.

Don't make these

Common mistakes.

Most “it didn't fit” stories trace back to one of these oversights.

  1. ⚠Measuring only the inside of the car. The door opening is usually narrower than the car, so measure it too, with the doors fully open.
  2. ⚠Leaving out the car height or depth. A long item often has to stand on end or tilt inside the car, so those two sizes can decide the answer.
  3. ⚠Writing numbers with no unit. "36" could be inches or centimeters, so write 36 in or 91 cm.
  4. ⚠Not checking building rules. Many buildings require the freight elevator, wall pads, or a booked moving time.

Frequently asked

Questions we keep getting.

  • What is the standard residential elevator size?

A typical residential passenger elevator car is about 68 to 84 in wide, 51 to 66 in deep and 90 to 96 in tall, with a door 36 to 42 in wide (see our elevator dimensions reference). ADA minimum car floors include 68 in wide by 51 in deep (door to one side) and 54 in wide by 80 in deep. Sizes vary by building, so measure yours: the door opening width and height, and the car’s inside width, depth and height.

    01
  • Can I use the freight elevator instead?

Many apartment and office buildings have a larger service or freight elevator. It usually has a wider door opening, a deeper car and a higher weight limit, and you often have to book it. Measure its door and car the same way before moving day.

    02
  • What size elevator do I need for a couch?

The car height matters as much as the floor. A sofa 84 x 35 x 33 in fits a car 68 in wide, 51 in deep and 96 in tall with a 36 x 84 in door, turned as it goes in. In the same car at 90 in tall our check cannot confirm a way in. A sofa 96 x 38 x 34 in cannot fit a car 68 x 51 x 90 in at any angle. Give us your sofa’s three sizes and your elevator’s five, with units, for your own answer.

    03
  • Will a mattress fit in an apartment elevator?

    A queen (60 x 80 x 12 in) stood on its long edge fits a car 68 x 51 x 90 in with a 36 x 84 in door. With a 36 x 80 in door our check cannot confirm a way in, because the 80 in length meets the door height. A king (76 x 80 x 12 in) cannot fit a 68 x 51 x 90 in car at any angle, so it needs a larger car or the freight elevator.

    04
  • Can I move a fridge in an elevator?

Often, but measure the fridge with its handles and the dolly height included. A fridge that fits inside the car can still be stopped at the door, so give the door opening width and height as well as the car size.

    05
  • What if my item is taller than the elevator car?

It may still fit tilted, because the longest straight line inside the car runs from a bottom corner to the opposite top corner. A board 96 x 24 x 2 in fits a car 68 in wide, 51 in deep and 80 in tall with a 36 x 80 in door, with almost no room to spare. That is why the check needs the car height and depth, not only the floor.

    06
  • Do I need to pad the elevator?

Many buildings require wall pads in the elevator during a move to protect the car. Check with the building before moving day. Some provide pads, others ask you to bring your own.

    07
  • Should I also measure the hallway from the elevator to my unit?

Yes. The hallway width and any turns between the elevator and your door matter as much. A tight hallway corner can be harder than the elevator itself.
