3-seat sofa · 32″ doorway
78×34×32 in. With cushions removed and tilted 12° on entry, clears the 32″ frame with 2.5″ to spare.

This calculator determines if furniture, appliances, and large items will fit through standard doorways. We account for door frame width, door swing clearance, and diagonal tilt strategies—covering interior doors, exterior entries, and narrow hallways.
Three possible answers
Every check returns one of three outcomes — with the dimensions, the constraints that mattered, and exactly how we reached the verdict.
78×34×32 in. With cushions removed and tilted 12° on entry, clears the 32″ frame with 2.5″ to spare.
35.75″ wide with handles. Removing the handles drops width to 34.5″ — fits with 1.25″ clearance after door-trim subtract.
76×80×10 in. Even tilted on edge, the 30″ clear opening is 2″ short of the mattress depth. Consider removing the door from its hinges or using a wider entry.

Frequently asked
Standard interior doorways are 32 inches wide (clear opening), while exterior doors are typically 36 inches. Building codes require a minimum clear opening of 32 inches for accessibility.
01Door trim (casing) typically protrudes 0.5 to 1 inch on each side of the frame. This means a 36-inch nominal door may only have 34–35 inches of usable clearance.
02Yes — removing the door from its hinges adds roughly 1.5 to 2 inches of extra width. The hinge pins usually pop out with a screwdriver and hammer.
03Try tilting or rotating the item at an angle. You can also remove the door for extra width. If it still won't fit, check for wider entry points like patio doors or sliding glass doors.
04Not straight through. It may fit if the sofa can rotate so a smaller depth or height leads through the opening, but a true 40 inch rigid width is larger than a 32 inch clear door. Remove legs, cushions, and the door slab, then run the calculator with the sofa depth, height, and actual clear opening.
05Yes — the hallway in front of the door determines your turning radius. A narrow hallway limits how much you can angle a large item to get it through the opening.
